@Dlcromwell not sure where you are going in AZ but just spent 2 weeks there coming from LA. I actually opted into the EA monthly plan before I went and had no trouble with any of their chargers. I think I used 5 different ones. They were also better priced with the plan vs the Rivian ones. There are 3 or 4 Rivian ones that are well placed through the state too.

Think EA has been making improvements - 2-3 years ago when I had a Tesla I had the same poor experience but in the last year they have all been solid.

I am trying to plan a trip from MT to AZ and want to avoid EA charging stations and set Tesla as a priority. No matter what I deselect in filters and settings EA and RAN, of which there ain't hardly any, are the only ones that show up in the plan. I know that EA has changed to a "plug and charge" system but I have not tried it so have no experience but EA is sooo unreliable compared to Tesla that I prefer not to charge there. Does Rivian have a financial interest in EA and that is why you cannot deselect it? I know that ABRP shows 99% Tesla charges but I cannot upload the plan into the R1T(Gen 2) or I don't know how to do it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I can confirm, with only Rivian and Tesla selected as networks, both the Rivian app Trip Planner and ABRP direct me to the EA in Dell, MT. I'm guessing it's because the Tesla Supercharger in Lima, MT is not open to non-Tesla vehicles at this time. It's an older location that needs to be upgraded. Between Butte, MT and Blackfoot, ID, the EA stations in Dell and Idaho Falls are the only fast charging options for Rivians I see right now. I've never stopped in Dell, but the PlugShare rating looks decent plugshare.com/location/158458 and multiple R1T drivers have shared their successful charging experience there. If that's the only EA stop you need to make, that's not so bad.
Happy motoring!

Do you have any evidence or any reason to believe that Tesla is actively upgrading any of the V2 chargers? Have they upgraded even one since they started opening the chargers to other vehicles back in early 2024?

I have no idea what Tesla is doing or plans to do. I do believe this location needs to be upgraded to be used by non-Tesla vehicles, or replaced, maybe by a new location somewhere nearby that supports non-Tesla NACS. It would be nice as a driver to see some competition with another provider installing something in the area, but I am not a charging network analyst and I have no opinion on whether it's economically feasible or strategically important. "Just my $0.02", YMMV, etc.

Neither does anyone else. Yet this myth about Tesla upgrading the old V2 stations keeps coming up time and time again, to the point where it's just an accepted "fact".

In practice, Tesla is adding lots of new stations all the time, but as far as upgrading, I haven't seen that happen. Ever. And unfortunately they're not adding the new stations along the same routes as the old V2, so there are big gaps in the Tesla network (e.g. WY, SD) for those of us with non-Tesla vehicles.

+1 on ABRP. I use it first to plan a trip. It is a little more complicated to set up, but it also obtains live data from the Rivian while traveling. When it does choose a charger I don’t want there is a process built in to replace the charger with another one.

I understand what you're saying about myths, but I have not been keeping up with the discourse on this. Personal anecdote: on one of my often-travelled routes, Tesla has a location in Mojave, California that started with an older Supercharger that doesn't accept non-Tesla vehicles. It's still there:

plugshare.com/location/62657

Tesla added a new installation in the same shopping center parking lot with newer Superchargers that accept non-Tesla vehicles:

plugshare.com/location/569016

and expanded to a third location in the same shopping center:

plugshare.com/location/552974

I'm guessing this kind of expansion is rare, but it has happened.

You can find more evidence of expansion on supercharge.info/changes by filtering for the "Expanding" status. It looks like there at least 63 sites that expanded with NACS added, mostly in CA and TX. I could be wrong though.

Tesla has expanded some existing v2 sites with v3 stalls. When they do this, they do not add 3rd-party access because it would be confusing as to why some stalls work and others don't. I know Limon, CO in the Arby's parking lot is one such site. It went live in June 2014 as a 6 stall v2 site. In May of 2022, it was expanded with 8 v3 stalls for a total of 14 stalls.

Initial opening - https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/posts/686489/
Expansion available - https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/posts/6733502/

They generally don't rip out an existing v2 site and replace it. They either expand that site (not granting access to 3rd party vehicles) or build another site, possibly just on the other side of the parking lot, which can have access to 3rd party EVs.
