It makes them a better business, not a better product. Just saying many businesses with a superior product still end up failing.
It underscores that they’re a DIFFERENT business, with a different target audience. McDonald’s and Thomas Keller aren’t chasing the same customers.
The original point is this:
Just because CTs sell more doesn’t mean they’re a superior product, no matter how much glue they use to hold them together. In this metaphor, Tesla is McDonald’s and Rivian is Thomas Keller’s French Laundry.

To keep going with the metaphor, a big problem with the Cybertruck is that it's McDonald's build quality at French Laundry prices.

Las Vegas Police Put New Fleet of Electric Cybertrucks on Display

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's fleet of all-electric Tesla Cybertrucks—the nation's largest—was fully paid for by a donation from the co-founder of a venture capital firm and his wife.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the vehicles will respond to high-risk calls, serve as a recruitment tool and help evaluate the long-term feasibility of electric patrol fleets.

Recruitment tool??

Nice work, LVPD. Evaluate the "long-term feasibilty" of an EV fleet by choosing the worst one you could possibly find :CWL:

LVPD will write you a ticket for going 2 mph over posted limit... so that, if you have connections, you can pay $150 (in circa 2010 money) to have the court change it to illegal parking. Otherwise it's $300. Shake-down goons with badges.

But Rivian and Tesla are chasing the exact same customers. It’s the same target audience and price point and same business, Tesla is simply the superior business and Rivian is the superior product.

Tesla isn't the superior business, given their recent decisions. They have a higher market cap, but if Tesla's little robots don't pan out or they don't pivot quickly, they are done. Their designs are stale except for the CT, which is a disaster greater than the Edsel.

SpaceX buying the CT's of Tesla that aren't selling to outside customers doesn't inspire confidence that they have a better business (even if understandable to use last chance on the tax credit if SpaceX has a real need for pickup trucks).

When reality is this ridiculous, I can't even come up with a joke.
Any bets on how long the Cybertrucks last in the Las Vegas police department?
No idea, but if I ever end up in the back of one I'll just keep yelling " TURN ON AIR, TURN ON AIRBAG"
Or maybe "Hey Tesla, activate wheels off mode". *Poof! Wheels eject*
