Just a note - I have SO gotten used to the One Pedal Driving (OPD) in my R1T; LOVE IT! I think, other than to tap the brakes to deactivate the cruise control or driver assist functions on occasion, I've used the actual brake pedal perhaps 5 times this YEAR. OPD Brings my 8,500 pound truck to a resounding stop and holds it there.

My husband just entered into a lease on a Tesla Model Y. The OPD is... weak... at best. The only time the vehicle stops (in what we perceive as a normal stopping distance to whatever is in front) is when FSD is engaged. Otherwise, under manual control, we have to use the brakes for the last 3 yards or so to get to a full stop. The HOLD function also tends to... not. Often the car begins creeping forward. It's... disconcerting. The vehicle is set for maximum OPD response, but... not that great.

Yeah, Rivian!

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

Yeah, Rivian!
I’m leasing a Model 3 and the OPD used to be stronger when I first got it. Subsequent updates later and now it’s really weak. I wonder if they messed with the default setting to appease the masses. I’d like more regen.

I noticed the same thing. We have both an R1S and a Model Y and I drove the Y just the other day and thought something was wrong. The OPD is very weak. The Rivian is just better. Due to the weight of the Rivian it needs to be. When I use to drive the Model Y it didn’t seem to be an issue. Switching from vehicle to vehicle you really feel the difference.

It's the same with my wife's i4M50. That has a much weaker OPD, and the hold function doesn't work nearly as well.

I drove both Gen 1 R1T and 2020 MY. It takes some adjustment switching between vehicles. When I occasionally jump in the MY, I’m in the middle of an intersection, unless I tap the brakes for the 1st couple red lights, until I reacclimate.

R1T regen is much stronger. But MY does in deed Hold if settings are set correctly. It is an adjustable setting.

I generally prefer the R1T regen strength but, sometimes I need to take my foot off the accelerator to adjust my foot position and it is way more noticeable on the R1T than the MY. As a workaround I try to remember I’ll engage ACC when doing so.

I'm traveling and have a M-B EQB 300 rental. I eventually found the left & right paddles to increase & decrease the regen but it's annoying to have to use the brake pedal to come to a full stop even in the highest regen mode..

Also annoying is having to keep your foot on the brake pedal while stopped to keep from creeping forward. The auto park feature of the Rivian is so much better.

Weaker OPD makes it easier to drive smoother if someone doesn't have great throttle control. I wish the Rivian had weaker OPD when my wife is driving! 😬

One touch of the screen turns it down while driving...I know you're making a "ball and chain" joke, but I got hung up on that.
(Assuming you stay on the telemetry screen like I do)

It's a matter of personal preference and what you are accustomed to. We drove a Model Y for 5 years before getting the Rivian. OPD was great in the highest setting on Model Y ... rarely used the break. Model Y regen high setting is about the same as Rivian mid setting. For a while I used the Rivian high setting and got used to it quickly. The problem for us is USAA insurance, where we can get a big discount by having our phones monitor the driving. The thing which takes the most points away (lowering discount) is harsh breaking. With Rivian max regen USAA interpreted too often as harsh breaking if I took my foot totally off the go peddle and coasted to a stop. So we went to mid-level regen, which solved the harsh breaking issue. It was an insurance financial decision.

Are you not able to set separate driving profiles?

My wife will not drive unless some emergency required it. Too big, too much power, too expensive.

Have 5 EV’s. Rivian 1st in OPD, M3 2nd, Mach e 3rd, Etron 4th but I kind of like hand pedals.

i do like Mach e / etron for winter in ice with being able to completely turn off. M3 can get super sketchy.

Having driven several EVs, I'd have to agree that Rivian's is the best calibrated, specially on Gen2 vehicles. I'd have the opposite experience in which every time I drive a Tesla, I find the OPD too strong but can get accustomed quickly. On the other side of the isle, the Mach-E borderline coast until it slows to a stop. Recently had a Chevy Silverado EV rental and the regen there is a disaster at best. Seems like it didn't account for speed, so at low speed it was too harsh and at high speed it was never enough. Could have been an issue with the one I had, but I hated it. Lucid's OPD is very well tuned as well, if probably on the strong side.

As for Rivian, since my first test drive, it just felt natural. Didn't need to adjust, it just did as expected.

I've been teaching my oldest to drive. First trip out in the Rivian I had to turn down the regen for this exact reason. Svelte pedal control isn't in his wheelhouse yet.

Are you all sure you're apples to apples comparing? Is the brake assist option on where the Rivian will automatically use the friction brakes too if regen gets too potent?
