Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
I had always told myself my R2 would come in April. Now I’m thinking March. Won’t rule out late February….
The questions are do you have a reservation and/or are you waiting for the Gen3 hardware with lidar.

Yes we have a reservation. Within the first 10 minutes of opening the list.

No! We are not waiting for Gen 3. My wife and I have zero interest in self driving features. What we currently have on our Gen 2 R1T very rarely gets engaged.

We will step up for the team and take one of the first R2's off the line.

Just remember that when the new hardware comes out the resale value on older tech will tank. I suspect a 5-10k price variance on resale for same model year with and without gen 3

Really only matters if you don’t keep the vehicles long. After 8 or more years they even out and then is more about condition.

I used to replace my vehicles every 2 or 3 years, last 15+ years not so much. My grand Cherokee was 9 years old when I got rid of it, my Tesla is over 9 years old, R1S is 3 with no plans to get rid of it so for our needs an R2 with enhanced G2 hardware is an easy choice.

It Is kind of like the iPhones, I used to always chase the latest and greatest, then I realized most of the newer features I never used. Now instead of getting a phone every 12-18 months I usually keep them 5+ years unless it gets damaged.

I wonder if I begged and pleaded if they would run our R1S through that to align the doors, hood and panels :CWL:

Sounds like a plan. Enjoy your R2 Launch Edition. Exciting times.

totally disagree. nothing like that between Tesla fsd hardware revisions. majority of people just aren't that granular into car specs.

So looking forward to the R2.

just on the re-sale/no Gen 3 hardware thing… I’m not so sure your value will be much less. I say that as someone who has typically owned fully loaded cars and whenever I trade them in or sell them private, the buyers never give a shit about those features. Bit like when you plug it in to KBB or Carvana, you still get the same awful value!
Age, mileage and condition still seem to trump all.

Yep, same here. Had the sport version of a vehicle once. Accounted for very little in resale value, especially considering the three factors listed above.

Also you would think that Gen2 vehicles would benefit from Gen3’s data collection via lidar the same way that Tesla uses lidar to validate FSD.

I'll offer a counter argument on resale values.

The recent market trends have shown most EV customers value affordability and range. Not autonomy (see 15% up-take on Telsa "FSD"). If the Gen 3 R2 costs thousands more because of the autonomy features (likely, IMO) + subscription fees. The Gen 2 R2 will be desirable on the used market because it gives those customers what they want, a great EV at an affordable price without unnecessary features.

It’s possible that you are right, however, I suspect there may be a price bump when the Lidar version comes out. Rivian has long advertised the 45K price point for the R2, but inflation keeps inflating. So I would not be at all surprised if the first batch meet that advertised price point, but the added features will cost more.
