22 R1T used purchase questions

I bought a used '23 R1T from a non-Rivian dealer and the local Rivian service center wouldn't release the service history to me even after I bought it and had all the registration etc. complete.

It seems to be very much service center dependent. I understand wanting to remove any of the previous owner's information, but they should make it to where you can see see the service history.

Went and drove the truck. Everything seemed to check out. All original accessories were included like flashlight, speaker, compressor hose and first aid kit. It seemed like it was the original power tonneau but it did still work the 3 times I opened and closed it. Went through all ride heights without issue. Tires probably need to be replaced but that's not unexpected. Seems like it is going to be my initial ticket into Rivian ownership.

The salesman had never seen one in person before this one. Was laughing a little because I was rattling off all the information about them. He said "you certainly have done your homework, you want to come work here too?"

Glad it sounds like it's a solid truck! My R1T is a 5### VIN and still has the original PTC. I don't do anything, but try to keep the tracks clear of stuff like leaves or pine needles. I got about a year and a half left on the 5 year/60k warranty. I secretly hope the cover fails at some point next year to get it replaced under warranty with the newer version.

I wouldn't be overly concerned if you were to get a quality one from like A2Z or Lectron. I wouldn't go with a no name cheap one off Amazon or something like that. Looks like there are also some OEM Rivian ones on eBay for around $150.

I'm sure you already know, but you'll need a separate adapter for DC fast charging (Tesla super chargers) and level 2 charging (like Tesla destination chargers).

agree - I have a Tesla wall charger (sadly didn’t get universal when we got our model Y a few years back) and use the A2Z adapter on both our Rivian’s with no issues at all.

Stevetom84 gave a great list and it sounds like you put it to work. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend a ‘22 Rivian to anyone at this point. I crossed the 60k mark 2 months ago and held my breath. One thing after another started to happen. First, my interior started to leak water after any exposure to the elements. Rivian SC in Montreal repaired this as a “goodwill” gesture after they found a bad seal in the trim piece between the glass roof and the windshield. I’m not sure if there would be any long term damage to the electronics in back of the rear view mirror as this was where the water was streaming out.

The second major issue I had was when I was doing my semi-annual tire changeover, my suspension failed to lower after I was finished and I smelled something burning. It turned out to be a failed compressor and a fried wire harness. I was about to agree to the roughly $3-4000 repair and then I said to myself the last three and a half years have been fun but I have no faith that this is the end. The fact that Rivian doesn’t offer an extended warranty speaks volumes to me.

Rivian has had wonderful customer service and the crew in the Montreal SC has been amazing. They understood and advised me to trade it in on a new one. Telling, don’t you think? The challenge for me moving forward was knowing that any repair including the last one would require me to going up to Montreal and having to get my own rental and paying out of pocket. I know, I’m an early adopter and it was a risk but it is by far the least reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Get something used with a longer warranty from Rivian if possible. I would not take the risk. I hope I’m wrong as I did love my truck. A dealer gave us $37k for a trade despite the repair that needed to be done. I wish you luck!

That sucks! Probably my biggest worry after warranty is suspension. It seems like anything goes wrong and you are quickly up to $5k in repair costs.

Rivian is testing a warranty called Rivian Care. They've been doing for awhile now and will hopefully expand availability in the near future. It doesn't help you now, but some have had success with a Xcare extended warranty as well.

For the OP it may be worth monitoring the availability of Rivian Care or purchase something like Xcare before the 5yr/60k warranty runs out. Once you have the R1T and get ownership transferred, you can log into your Rivian account and there is a section to express interest/be notified when Rivian Care options are expanded beyond Texas

Thanks for the reply. I’ve been chasing that option for a while and even asked when I initially ordered my R1T and took delivery in June ‘22. It was different back then. The only reasonable option for folks these days is the third party route it seems.
