I agree with this. It seems like Rivian is on a 3 year cycle with the R1. So I expect the 2028 will have significant changes. Maybe they will role some good things into the 2027, maybe not. But definitely 2028 should be a big year for the R1. IMO, of course.

2026 R1S
Details of the 2026 R1s came out in June 2025. I'm watching for the 2027 R1T also. Hopefully we'll see something in another couple weeks. We love our 2026 R1S so we're getting a R1T. We're not in a hurry so I'm waiting for lidar.

Yes, I agree the 28's probably will have some sort of body upgrade along with inside component upgrade.

2026 R1T Tri-Motor
Just ordered a 2026 Tri-Motor R1T that will be delivered in a few weeks. Sales team told me no major updates expected for 27 model; granted this was sales and they are always looking to close deals but I did believe them. Biggest thing for me on the 2026 was the NACS connector being built in as I'm a Tesla owner and don't want to deal with adapters when charging.

Congratulations on your tri motor! I know their won't b any drastic update on the 27 but I figured I still have until 9/2027 until my bumper to bumper runs out on my 2022.

Does anyone know when RIVIAN will start taking orders for the 2027 R1T? Also when do u think we could start taking delivery.
Rivians model year stays with the calendar year. A 2026 is a 2026 all of the year. Not
Iike other manufacturers that start in mid year and begin offering the next years models around September.

They have done "before the calendar cutover" for major changes. The early Gen 1s, even those sold in 2021, were labeled 2022. The Gen 2 Quad was released in late 2025, but got a 2026 model year, because 2026 was the model year for NACS-equipped vehicles. When dual and tri were released with NACS later in 2025, they got 2026 model year.

But other than "notable changes", yes, they only switch at calendar year barriers.

Thankfully they didn't follow Tesla in "pure calendar year, even for major changes." There are way too many variations of "2016" Tesla Model S.

Also, when R1 Gen2 launched in 2024, it was a 2025 model year.

So really, so far 2023 has been the only year that has been firmly "this model year shipped during the matching calendar year, the only mismatches were at the absolute beginning of the year and the following year when prior-model-year may have shipped a little late."
