Disclaimer: This is just my opinion.I think they could probably get away with being 5-10% more than the Model Y, assuming equivalent range figures.
I say that because I believe the market will be willing to pay some premium for a more "rugged adventure vehicle", from a brand with less baggage, and a vehicle that hasn't become the Camry of the EV world.
Look at the pricing difference between the Toyota 4Runner and Honda Passport. Very similar in size/concept, but the 4Runner obviously has the edge in off-road market positioning/equipment/owner community (arguably the Passport could be seen as the more reliable choice given it's still using the well-regarded 3.5L V6). Honda Passport Trailsport MSRP = $48,650. Toyota 4Runner TRD Premium 4WD = $56,905. That's a 17% premium for the 4Runner with relatively similar convenience features.
I agree. There will be a premium for the R2 compared to the Model Y. I think somewhere between $55K to $60K for the well-equipped launch edition. Tesla is still making a profit on each vehicle sold, albeit by a smaller margin, but Rivian is not. Also Rivian interiors are nicer than Tesla interiors, so you’re going to pay extra for those materials.
Once they get past the launch editions, none of which will have Gen 3 hardware unless they decide to continue that trim into late 2026/early 2027, they’ll continue to ramp up the dual-motor middle trim with fewer included features. I’d say these will be between $50K and $55K.
Having the LiDar and Gen 3 hardware could affect this price, but I’m not sure by how much. Maybe $500 - $1,000? LiDar has become a lot cheaper in recent years, but I’m thinking the chips for the early Gen 3 hardware will still have to be sourced from NVidia until Rivian gets its own silicon up and running.
Again, this is just my opinion. I’m speculating. It’s fun to do.
