It makes total sense for Tesla to stop production of these vehicles as they haven't been significantly changed in years, and the competition is just too intense for this type of stagnation. With sales dropping globally for the brand they need to sure up as much profits as possible. I don't see a strong vehicle production future for them as the Model 3 and Y will continue to see sales decline and competition increase.

Personally I am thrilled to watch Musk struggle but I feel bad for the employees that will be impacted.
It ONLY makes sense because they haven't been significantly changed. It's like Tesla gave up on them years ago. The Model 3 and Y both got updated, but honestly i don't think it was good enough. They gave them what amounted to a mid cycle refresh, not the redesign they deserved. Tesla is giving up on cars.

The robot will come out and you'll have to pay an extra $10k for full autonomous mode otherwise it will have to be limited to menial tasks like sweeping the floor. it will basically be a $50k roomba

the Full autonomous mode will also be in beta for 10 years and not work very well, it might choke a few babies or impale a dozen family pets, but I'm sure the cult of Elon will praise them as the best thing ever.

Discontinuing Model S and X makes sense.

In their earnings call and their shareholder deck, it shows 53,900 vehicles total. This is sum of Cyber Truck, Tesla Semi, Model S and X. If one assumes roughly half for the trucks, then S and X are somewhere around 27,000 units.

The factory utilization in Fremont is very low at these quantity so they can cut costs and repurpose the line (Optimus).

It takes more money to update both S and X than they would return so they made the hard decision to end the line.
Elon had hinted at this a while back. These models usually are the last to get the latest updates and they were "refreshed" last year with minor changes. I've driven both, prefer the X but their price point and lack of third-party support, and poor sales had already made them obsolete.

I won't hold my breath on Optimus. If they can turn this to a consumer product at some point that can do household items, I'd be up for paying a lease, would never buy it outright.

Keep in mind that Tesla has yet to demonstrate these robots doing a single useful task or even a broad price range.

Any use-case you're imagining exists nowhere outside your own mind until Tesla gives more information.

Hopefully those robots are legit unlike the Model 2 and new roadster. Seems like they could have continued the Model X with minor refresh and simplified doors at a lower price point.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out cutting 40% of their product portfolio.
I’m sure they’ll be just as legit.

The luxury sedan market is dead, electric or ICE. Check the parking lot of any fitness studio in an upscale neighborhood. All the moms are driving luxury SUVs. Model X isn’t an SUV.

Interesting that instead of shifting focus to an SUV, Musk wants to build robots and self driving taxis.

I disagree. The luxury sedan market is small in comparison to SUV's, but certainly not dead.

But yes, in regards to the Model S, it didn't make sense to invest into an all new platform for that one. The Model X though, I'm certain (besides Elon's politics) that a thoroughly updated proper 3 row from them would of sold well, but they just let the X stay on the same (mostly) platform for so long to wither and die.

My uninformed opinion on that shift is there's more EV competition than ever and the profit margins are shrinking so he's trimming the least profitable (and most labor intensive to build) vehicles and moving on to other products that might still offer "first mover" profits for several years to come.

What do you mean "rival"? Rivian doesn't make a minivan...

I have an S Plaid, 1st Gen 3 long range, 2nd Gen 3 performance and my R1T. I had a modely Y and hated it. Couldn't really stand the X either. Too much of a guppy looking CUV.

The 3/Y won't replace the S/X. At this point I'll never sell my Plaid. It has real range even rolling on wide, sticky tires. It is far more comfortable for me than any of my other EVs including my Rivian. It would be in 2nd place for me. It is supremely quiet even at high triple digit speeds. At 150 it is quieter than my Rivian at 80 and I've done a massive amount to quiet my Rivian so it is much quieter than stock.

If they had really refreshed the S, I would have bought another one. Now if somethign happens to it, I'd buy a Lucid, may the Sapphire. I am so tired of SUVs and trucks being the norm for years. Sedans can be room and are much more efficient. I'd love to see an EV like my AMG E63S wagon. Holy hell that thing was a riot to drive and thunderously fast and carry all the crap my SUV could easily. Drift mode in it was so much fun.

I'd love to see something a little quirky in the EV market. Maybe Tesla will actually bring the roadster to market. I am hoping the R3 is what I hope it could be. Then I'd sell my 3 long range and buy it. I will keep the S until we part by some choice other than mine.
