My guess is that they are very averse to doing that lest it be interpreted as a hard delivery date and they be rolled for not meeting it. I've got the sense from the few official communications that we've received since last summers intial guide contacts, that they obviously think (internally) they screwed up by pulling that trigger too soon, and its fairly obvious how risk averse the c suite is.
I just think at this point, they're simply unwilling to tell someone to expect a vehicle on XX.XX.XXXX unless its already sitting at the service center, ready for delivery.

I still find it weird I am assuming there is no real notification or heads up saying your vehicle will be here in like 3 weeks, 2 weeks, 1 week, etc. I think @Iwantatesla said his window for notification was very short or something along those lines.
Can't offer much but as a view of how GM is handling this same process, You're not given much of a warning from them either. A user on the hummer forum said they got a vague email saying their truck was built, a VIN from the dealer 5 days later, and 9 days after the first e-mail, the dealer was calling saying the truck was at their dealership. Two days for PDI and delivery the following Monday. I guess GM is having an engineer give a once-over on the truck once PDI is done to make sure everything is good. Guess they really don't want the first buyers to have a reason to be unhappy about anything.

I can see the argument of them making trucks for people without confirming a configuration and they know they can sell them as others have suggested but I kinda doubt they would ship them across the country, that would add a lot of cost if they buyer opted out and they had to ship them elsewhere.

I would think the dozen or so trucks I've posted pictures of hauling R1T's would take no more than 5 days for a cross country haul (though, illinois is fairly central so maybe less). For the sake of conservatism, I'll assume 5 days of travel time, and 2 days for inexerienced service staff to properly QC the vehicles prior to signing off on the vehicle for a delivery. Then Rivian Central presumably takes a day to get into their, identify the individual in the service area who's turn it is for that particular spec and turns on the delivery features in the app for that person's username. So my point is, theres still time left for jan/feb windowee's to get some good news. I would think that end of next week is the squeal point. If @godfodder0901 et al. don't hear something by next week, I'd guess they've slipped again.
There are a ton of 3PL distribution centers outside of Chicago (Romeoville has a ton) used by CPG companies and the standard published trucking lane times from there are 2-3 days to almost anywhere in the lower 48. SoCal or Seattle might be 4, especially in winter, so your 5 day estimate is both conservative and a good number to use, IME.

Your Rivian guide will reach out as time approaches. They told me when a truck was on transport. When it arrived at the service center and then scheduled delivery (this will vary depending on what your state allows).

Is this after they contacted you to confirm your configuration is all good to go, or did they skip that step? Reason i ask is that the tax incentive still hanging out there, but probably dead, and the limit of $80k to receive the credit. My config with the camp kitchen, tent, etc is well over that, so i don't want to risk paying $12,500 for the camp kitchen if that is going to cause the credit to drop by being over $80k. Thought the process was guide contact to confirm configuration, then updates when it is in production, and then more when shipped, and delivery date estimate???

I'm guessing this means a Guide should make contact much sooner if the customer purchased a Rivian wall charger, so it can be shipped and installed prior to delivery?

It appears you may not have ordered one. Maybe those that have Jan/Feb delivery dates did not order a wall charger either. If they did, time isn't on their side.

Tax credit is based off the MSRP of the base car it doesn't include options unless they change the verbiage in the bill (if it even gets passed). This was after I confirmed everything via their step by step on the website

Has the previous tax benefit expired? Rivian has not reached 200,000 EV sold. So there should be a $7,500 tax credit available.

Just did a quick search. Yes, Rivian still qualifies you for a $7,500 deduction in the taxes you owe. IE if you paid more than $7,500 in taxes you will get that amount back.

The IRS makes it easy to look up vehicles by manufacturer and see what the actual credit is. See here:

https://www.irs.gov/businesses/irc-30d-new-qualified-plug-in-electric-drive-motor-vehicle-credit

It doesn’t list the R1S yet, but that should qualify as well.

My window isn't until March-April, but I thought I'd just chip in what info I do have. I asked about how much "lead time" I'd have before scheduling the actual delivery, and my Guide informed me that I would receive an email link to complete the purchasing process "A few days before delivery"

So take that as you will, but it sounds to me like there won't be a 2 or 3 week warning. You'll get an email and everything will just kinda cascade from there

That's just great - doesn't leave a heck of a lot of time to sort out the financing then. Can I pay by credit card - lol. I could use the points.

What does that mean WRT financing? Seems like you would be running around like a chicken with its head cut off to arrange it in time - and that's best case! Worst case, you have to delay delivery for a week or more while financing is set up. I think my CU gives an approval & quote that's good for 30 days, and with a 90 day window, that would be an issue.
I don't actually remember how long it took to arrange financing last time I bought a car (9 years ago) but what is a normal time to assume now. Assume good to excellent credit using something other than Rivian's financing partner.

Last purchase I made was a used BMW M2. I applied for financing on my Bank of America app and had approval in less than a minute. Better rate than BMW was offering too. I suppose it depends on your credit and banking history with the lender.

How long does it take to sort financing? My credit union can give me an answer in like 25 minutes. If I can get a better rate elsewhere I can refinance after I take delivery.
