I'm sure they used launch mode later in the video, but they didn't mention anything about it then. Without leaving your foot in the throttle all the way up from 0 to 130 mph, it'll limit at 110. So roll races that last a quarter mile or more are kinda stupid.I couldn't tell how they set up the R1T in the Carwow video. I assume they didn't use launch mode. Is that the fastest way to 0-60 or quarter mile in a Rivian? Or does turning off traction control do the same thing?
I wish this was prosecuted much more than it is. I can't sit on my porch without hearing modified vehicles accelerate from the stop light 3000 feet away.I love sports cars, but I can't bear how loud some of the cars are. It's unnecessary and obnoxious. A Ferrari or an Lfa sounds beautiful, this doesn't. To each their own.
Roll races are generally intended to give the ICE vehicle a chance. They weren't much of a thing until EVs showed up.I'm sure they used launch mode later in the video, but they didn't mention anything about it then. I'm assuming the first two standing drag races that the Rivian lost were because he didn't keep the throttle completely planted and it came out of launch early.
But you can't haul a sheet of plywood in a Miata, and that matters to some people, like me.No, the R1T isn't a supercar, a stock Miata can get around a curvy track faster.
I think one reason is that most super cars are terrible at day to day stuff. Reliability and running costs (idk if owners care) will do the rest.If I owned a supercar, I dunno say some fancy limited production Ferrari, I’d make it even rarer as the only one with 200k miles on it. I’d use it as a daily, a grocery getter, a take the dog to the park type of car. What the point of having a vehicle if you are only going to drive it on sunny days with no chance of rain. And only take it to meet up with others who own the same type of car? Boring!!
Agree. It's a brilliant truck/suv capable of doing things other trucks/suvs cannot. A sports car it is not.
Mostly unrelated, but I saw a silly video on YouTube the other day of a family's young daughter telling her Dad she wanted to "launch" their 70s Challenger while Mom filmed from the porch. She got it revved up, feathered the clutch out, and that thing practically attempted to break gravity lock. She was on it for less than a few seconds and the wheels ripping full spin. It was hysterical. They were giggling like maniacs.I would have some dolt revving his Camaro at the light next to me. I would just push the brake pedal hard and step on the gas. The torque would begin to build and the car would begin to rise.
Heres some numbers to have fun with and argue over:
| R1S Quad Max | 764 kW | 3095 kg | Curb | 0.247 kW/kg | 4.05 kg/kW |
| R1S Tri Max | 634 kW | 3096 kg | Curb | 0.2047 kW/kg | 4.88 kg/kW |
I've done the same thing in my dual motor. The chassis will hold the weight in place FAR FAR longer than the AT tires will allow you to. It's quite alarming how quickly it both builds up and bleeds off speed. Aside from the traction control aids, it feels almost as dangerous as the old days where a kid in a Camaro was his own worst enemy. Without a little self awareness you can QUICKLY get into trouble with these things.I will say that as someone who loves to flog lightweight cars through canyon roads, the R1T is capable of carrying *way* more speed than I'd have thought possible even on the stock AT tires. Only really did it once and had to back off because it was mildly terrifying knowing how much it weighs. Torque vectoring on the quad is magic so long as you aren't a complete gorilla and respect the weight on corner entry.
They've been a thing for years. Any car that can't launch but has a ton of power wanted one. The import guys really made it a thing back in the early '00's. FWD cars making 400+hp and weighing less than 3k lbs weren't uncommon then. Would usually lead to lots of tire smoke from a standing start.Roll races are generally intended to give the ICE vehicle a chance. They weren't much of a thing until EVs showed up.
For most people who own any 2 seater sports car, regardless of make or model that costs low (e.g., Miata) or high (e.g., Ferrari), it is not the only vehicle the person uses. Still, some people do drive it as their daily driver. If I owned a supercar, I dunno say some fancy limited production Ferrari, I’d make it even rarer as the only one with 200k miles on it.
