I prefer TuneIn Radio over Spotify, Amazon, Sirius XM. etc. because I like a wide variety of music and want to be constantly surprised. If find the human-curated stations offer the best variety of music and expose me to stuff I've never heard before.
My station line-up includes:
Mad Music Asylum — Internet-only station out of Aiken, SC. A 24-hour stream featuring music "too good to be ignored" and tunes largely forgotten by commercial radio, with a diverse mix from the 1960s through today aimed at the late baby boom generation. Has since expanded into a family of five streaming stations covering classic rock, oldies, jazz, blues, and the Grateful Dead. WikipediaSiriusXM
Cygnus Radio — Connecticut-based internet station, broadcasting continuously since February 2005. Self-described "old-school, free-form radio" with live DJ shows. Programming ranges from deep-cut classic rock and obscure '60s-'70s recordings to Texas music, progressive rock, metal, country, and indie — often in the same hour. Human-curated, personality-driven, and genuinely unpredictable. WikipediaSiriusXM
KJIV / JiveRadio — Low-power nonprofit FM out of Madras, Oregon, streaming globally. A self-described "schizoclectic" mix of Americana, blues, jazz, reggae, western swing, ska, and more. Founded by Jeff Cotton, whose playlist concept was "a mix of country stuff the cowboys would like, mixed in with stuff the hippies would like — an invented common denominator." Its lineage traces directly to the legendary KFAT and KSAN. No megahits from any artist — ever. Columbia Gorge News + 2
KEXP — Seattle's own (88.5 FM), one of the most influential independent radio stations in the country. Nonprofit, listener-supported, associated with the University of Washington. Covers indie rock, alternative, electronic, hip-hop, world music, and Americana, with a strong commitment to emerging artists and live sessions. Known internationally for its YouTube live performances.
WDST / Radio Woodstock — 100.1 FM out of Woodstock, NY. AAA-format station with deep roots in the Hudson Valley music community. Leans toward Americana, singer-songwriter, classic rock, and folk, with a laid-back vibe that reflects its home turf. Live local programming and a strong local music focus.
WYEP — 91.3 FM Pittsburgh, PA. Community public radio with an eclectic AAA format covering indie, folk, Americana, blues, and world music. Strong local music programming and a deep commitment to independent artists. Often mentioned alongside WXPN as one of the best public radio music stations in the Northeast.
KUTX — 98.9 FM Austin, TX, operated by UT Austin. Eclectic public radio rooted in Austin's live music culture. Covers indie, Americana, singer-songwriter, alt-country, and local artists heavily. A gateway into the Austin music scene for national audiences.
KCMP / The Current — 89.3 FM Twin Cities, MN, operated by Minnesota Public Radio. One of the most respected AAA public stations in the country. Wide range from indie and alternative to folk, Americana, and soul, with excellent new music discovery and strong local programming. Very similar sensibility to KEXP.
Radio Paradise — Listener-supported internet-only station founded by Bill Goldsmith, a KFAT/KSAN veteran — making it a direct sibling to the Jive Radio philosophy. Ad-free, human-curated, lossless FLAC streams available. Multiple channels: Main Mix (the flagship eclectic stream), Mellow Mix, Rock Mix, World/Etc Mix, and the newer jazz-influenced Beyond channel. Widely considered the gold standard of eclectic internet radio.
(Thanks to Claude for providing a short description of each station!)
