The Overland trim of the Jeep Recon was on display at the Silicon Valley Auto Show. They allowed us to get inside, play with the electronics, open all the doors and hatches, and check out the frunk (tiny) and trunk (also small). I also got the dimensions and weight.

The Recon is a nice vehicle, but a distant second choice compared to the R2 if R2 lives up to RJ's expectation setting.

What are your thoughts on the Jeep Recon? I personally love the look, but Jeep does not have a good track record with EV’s thoughts

I love the idea behind it. In theory, this should have been a homerun for Jeep. R2 sales might have been in trouble.

But then reality hit the Recon with a sledgehammer. Stellantis clearly has 0 interest in making EVs work. They quickly threw them under the bus for underperforming across the board. The Recon was an early project that they then rushed out to be like "hey! we did an EV! And EVs suck so it won't sell so self fulfilling prophecy fulfilled!"

It is not priced competitive. The range is an absolute joke. I don't think these will sell unless gas prices keep rising and stay there.

Had Jeep given a shit in some alternate reality and gave this thing at least 300 miles of range and priced it around $50kish, then this would be cool. I would love an EV that I can take the doors off and enjoy when the weather is nice. I like the looks, size and speed along with decent charging times. The bones were there. Unfortunately, I don't think these will do well which is a damn shame.

The R2 will benefit though from this market. You want an electric Jeep? The R2 is as close as we are going to get currently.

All that to say, I hope I'm wrong. But based on the release of the Wagoneer S and Charger EV, this might be DOA too. We'll see.

The Recon would've been closer to an "electric Wrangler" than the R2, but it's overpriced, under-ranged, and they're too obsessed with 0-60. The removable doors are very cool, it was have some open roof options, but no thanks. And I saw that as someone who was very interested initially.

Jeep is just pulling too many stupid moves. Our '24 4xe is our second, and while we haven't had any specific issues (and they credited us a couple of payments out of left field), the way the recalls have been handled has been pretty poor - and then they just bailed on the PHEVs.

The Wagoneer S has done poorly (sales and reviews).

And they just constantly pull stupid shit, like they're doing this one special edition Jeep a month (which is kind on fun) all year. Initially they released the Moab 392 which undercut the previous 392 models by like 20 grand (which caused a lot of grumbling with Rubi 392 owners).

Then they said they were going to release a Willy's 392 that was about 10,000 less than the MOAB like slightly less options - excited a lot of people who don't want a lot of the extra electronics - they waited for three months had orders in only for deep to go, "oh never mind we're not really going to sell that model."

We had a 20 14 by E we loved it, our 20 44 by E we've loved even more due to the trim package but kind of less due to the recall hassles. A wrangler is a really interesting unique ride there's not really a whole lot like in the market other than maybe the Ford Bronco. But outside of that, they've got nothing for them, and given pretty mediocre-to-poor handling of EVs to date I would never consider a Recon / another Jeep product.

FWIW, I think of the R2 as the "Electric 4Runner" :)

Nailed it.

And fair, I do think of the R2 as benchmarking the 4runner while the R1 was going after the Land Rover crowd. I do hope a future variant or R4/R5 vehicle does the whole "electric Jeep" thing. I really love the idea of the Recon on paper. Shame the company behind it did not want to execute on the idea.

I own a convertible and I have always loved them. An open air experience in nice weather is such a vibe. Give me an EV that can do that and I will likely hold on to that car until the end of time.

Good lord, that needed a copy check hahahaha. In my defense it is kind of chaos here this morning. We have a brand new amazing place down in DTO and we’re finalizing what we’re taking down with the house up here in SA. Moving stuff into do not disturb areas for the estate sale coming up this weekend, so I just been doing drive-by postings using voice dictation but wow I needed to go back and edit that.

Yeah, where are the EV convertibles? I’m kind of surprised BMW didn’t jump on this, I feel like the i4 could’ve been offered as a convertible pretty easily unless there’s some core engineering issue that I am just not understanding.

I hear you about convertibles people talk about sunroof or open tops and what not and there’s nothing quite like the experience of an actual real convertible, we’ve had quite a few a couple of Mustang GT convertibles a 330 CI BMW convertible a Z3 and I had an S2000 for a while which is a glorious little roadster

I have been following the Jeep Wagoneer S and the Recon since they were announced quite a while ago. And saw the Overland trim of a Recon at an auto show in January 2026. But the vehicle still does not exist, and the dealerships are still clueless as to its existence and availability.

The Recon was a distant "Plan B" for the Rivian R2. Hopefully there will be an R2 in my garage in the coming months!!

Even with 30+ years as a happy Jeep owner, I would be very reluctant to buy an EV from Stellantis.

I read recently Stellantis is going to offer an ICE for this vehicle, most likely a plug in hybrid.

The STLA (Stellantis Large) platform supports both ICE and EVs. That means wasted space for transmission and transaxle assemblies in an EV platform!

The R2 has higher default ground clearance, a lower roof, and more storage than my Jeep because the latter has a transmission tunnel and multiple differentials.

100% this. Do not buy an EV from any legacy brands who are EV skeptics. You do not want to be a part of their half-assed experiment and preloaded anti-EV statistic. They should be paying you, not the other way around.

You'd have to be insane to purchase an EV from Stellantis!

They've had well documented battery issues with the 4Xe line, so rather than work with Samsung and fix that battery design and replace all the 4Xe batteries, what do they do? Cancel the whole 4Xe product line including the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid line as well.

That's the kind of company you'd be buying from... one that thinks it's better (for them of course) to just cancel a whole product line vs fixing an issue.

Yep, the 4Xe sold very well too. I was hoping they would of increased the range and power on it with the latest refresh of the Jeep Grand Cherokee but as you said...they just outright canceled it!
