This thread reminded me of how I damaged the hood of my truck in the first week of ownership.

I was testing how it opens, and I realized after hitting the button that it was going to hit the ladder hanging from the ceiling of my garage. I tried to stop the hood from opening by holding it, thinking it would detect the pressure and reverse or stop. It did not. It started bending and it was obvious continuing to hold it could damage the truck.

So I let go of the hood and watched it slam into the ladder.

I can't have nice things.

Rivian really needs to detect when something is blocking the hood when it is opening. Seems like a safety issue to me.

I purchased touch up paint and covered the spot with the paint. You can still see it, but it doesn't look any worse than a typical rock ding now.

Virgin no more :crying:

Irony is I have curbs on the floor, just didn't pull all the way up. Has anyone tried the touchup paints available on Amazon?

I removed that hinge about 6 years ago. I'm sure that saved my car on several occasion.

A word of caution on those curbs. I used them for a year, held down with a roll of 3M VHB tape. The curbs eventually popped loose, and I almost hit my fridge. I tossed the curbs.

Now I look for the concrete expansion joint in my rear view camera. The car is safe from hinges when the joint clears the white line on the screen.

Ouch, that scratch looks deep. I did something similar to my truck rear bumper last winter and a local detailer managed to wet sand most of it out. For 900 bucks at a certified shop you at least got peace of mind, but a mobile guy probably would've done it for half. Glad it looks new again.

When I had a smaller garage and it was tight getting my then vehicle in. I hung a tennis ball on a piece of string from the ceiling such that once my windshield touched the tennis ball I knew I was far enough in to be able to close the door. Only takes a few minutes to set it up. Worked perfectly and fit the eight years we lived there avoided and garage door issues!

Well, I knew it was a matter of time before I accidentally hit the tailgate button while the garage door was closing.

Does anyone know a Northern California or Bay Area mobile paint doctor? I bet some of this can be buffed out and maybe even the plastic. Thanks!

EDIT! Got it fixed at a Rivian certified repair center. The taillight was polished and scratch painted over. It looks like new. Cost $900.

Glad it's fixed to your satisfaction. You could have fixed that yourself for $90 and have a nice obital, cut and polish compound and a paint chip repair stick left over.

No a mobile guy would not. It was deep. Mobile guy would have only partially covered it.

Yeah no, Brian. It was deep. For $90 you would waste a few hours and then head to the shop.

I should add the $900 also included pointless dent removal from door.
