R1 21" Tires - OEM Pirelli Compared to Michelin Defenders

Many threads out there, but usually comparing worn OEM tires to brand new tires. This will be comparing brand new to brand new, some subjective results and some data.

Configuration: Gen 1 R1T Dual, 21" wheels, Aero covers removed

Location: PNW, mostly Seattle region mix of commute local highway, etc

Backstory:
My OEM tires were a bit worn, and due for replacement. Heard good things about the Michilen Defenders, did all the research and had them installed at the local discount tire. Next day I had a full alignment at the local service center, all was well. I drove those for ~1500 miles before I finally replaced them with the OEM Pirellis (also at discount tire) because I couldn't take the road noise any longer (more on that later). I've since driven the Pirellis a full 1500 miles as well and can say I have a solid back to back comparison. The weather, season, and roads were nearly identical during the time.

Subjective Results:
The Pirellis are quieter. I mean, what is strange is that the Michelin was actually much quieter at low speeds around town, at least from the outside (windows down). The problem was highway speeds. Above about 55-60 there was a... hum. Not super loud... but incredibly annoying, at least to me. It was steady, happened on multiple roads, almost like a harmonic. This doesn't seem to occur much to other sizes from what I've heard from other owners, so it might be something with this size ratio? Either way, I couldn't take it any longer so I took them back. We tried rebalancing, pressure, etc; no change. So I decided it was time to experiment by going back to the OEM tire and compare it.

Ride wise I felt they were pretty similar. Michelin was a tad softer, but they both handled fine.

Efficiency Data:
Since this was an experiment I was very careful to keep things as similar as possible. I left it in standard mode nearly all the time. Towed a trailer maybe 20 miles with each set, and generally drove the same pattern/location/routes. At ~1500 miles on the odometer they came in at:

Michelin Defenders: 2.33 mi/kWh​
Pirelli Scorpion : 2.51 mi/kWh​

Interestingly the Michelin's started out pretty much at 2.3 and didn't change much. The Pirelli's started out about the same, but slowly improved after the first 500 miles or so, leveling off at a reliable 2.5 by the 1000 mile mark.

Anyway, just another datapoint for the folks rocking the 21's out there.

This makes sense, Defenders weight ~5% more than the Pirellis should have a small impact making them slightly less efficient. Personally, I’d pick the Defenders all day long compared to the Pirellis. Especially considering they are $100 less per tire and will likely last longer than the Pirelli…I can’t help but feel like Rivian continues to choose the most expensive and shittiest tire…can’t they do any better?

I've been thinking about grabbing the Hanook iON HT. Do you want to do another 1500 mile test for me before I buy? ;)

I have over 55k miles on my oem 21” pirellis and have been pleased with them. Your info helps a lot in the decision to replace them. For the sake of noise, weight, efficiency, and lifespan, I am likely sticking to the oem tires for replacements. Costco is showing them to be about $50 cheaper than tire rack.

How the heck are you getting 55k on a set of the OEM 21"??? I drive pretty conservatively and my first set lasted 25k and my second set looks to be about the same. Is your regen setting low?
I’m not sure. I have Dual motor and do not have the performance upgrade, so I’m not as tempted to launch at every opportunity. 95% highway miles
And rotate every 5k

The T I bought in mid December 2025 had Pirellis dated 2024 - they obviously had more than the 500 miles showing in the dashboard. The truck pulled to the right - got an alignment in February - still pulled to the right. Checked the 3 brands available - Hankook had the best rating in every category - and the best price. Ordered tires online - picked up at TireRack warehouse in DE (no sales tax, no shipping fee). Another alignment after installation - no more pulling to the right.

The Hankooks have a better ride, better road feel, and are quieter. I'm liking them so far.

If I can ever get the screen shot with the ratings to load, I'll add that.

I had this exact type of experience.
Dec 25 R1T mfctd Dec 24, pirelli ATs. Pulled right. Got a free alignment at the start of ownership. We're at 10k miles now, still pulls to the right. Service center tried 3 times to get it fixed but it still pulled. They put 21s on and the problem disappeared.
Pirelli's suck.

When I was at the SC last week, the tech told me the second gen Pirellis are a lot better. They cost more than the Hankooks - probably the "Rivian premium".

I got about 47k on the OEM 21’s switched to a set of 20’s used locally with the AT’s huge difference in how terrible they were but was still way cheaper than the replacement stock Pirelli. Ended up putting on the Defender MS/2 next and they’ve been amazing… wear very even and expected and have about 20k on them and I think they are just as quiet if not a tad better. Efficiency is spot on to in comparison… avg. 2.47 on stock 21’s and 2.45 on these so far almost all hwy miles.
