While there were lots of hatch backs in the late '70s, the one the R3 most reminds me of is AMC's Gremlin, and you know, it did LOOK pretty cool in its day, a shame it was such a disappointment of a vehicle, although compared to it's domestic competition, the Pinto and the Vega, it's not bad. And yeah, the Pacer likewise looked really futuristic back then, but suffered from the same fatal DNA.

BTW, did you know that the Gremlin-inspired Hot Wheels model "Open Fire" is among the most expensive HW collectables?

And you know, now that I've taken a second look, I still have to admit the Gremlin still looks cooler than the R3, IMHO. ;p Perhaps it will be the design muse of the R4.
