I received an email from Rivian today telling me that me I will be able to choose a model in 12/26-1/27. I’d like to wait a bit, I understand I can defer without losing my position in line. Is that correct?
Your place in line is purely for when you get invited to order. Once you've been invited, you can place the order whenever you want - immediately, a few days later, weeks later, whatever. But your delivery estimate is based on when you actually order, they're not holding an unordered car for you. So if you don't want to order until Feb '27, you'll just have to wait the same delivery timeframe anyone else ordering your config in Feb would have to wait.

My 22" OEM Pirelli tires are excellent. Good all around performance, quiet and efficient. I think the complaints are regarding the 20" AT tires. Apparently they get very noisy when they wear.
Yeah I have the Pirelli AT on my R1T and the sound drives me nuts, that is like 100% why I did not go with the AT on the R2, ordered the 21's with AS tires.

I hope someone can answer that question. My email says my invite to order is Dec-Feb. And if @Bullwinkle is correct about the two 4-6 week periods, we should be able to order GW with CC interior and hopefully get the Gen3 with lidar for Thanksgiving, worst case.
There will be no Gen3 with LIDAR anywhere near Thanksgiving, just to set your expectations.

Thanksgiving is in November. If you're invited to start ordering in December, then click order. You still have a 4+ week wait after that. So you wouldn't see your car till earliest January 2027. Of course your invite window runs till February so you may not see your car till March 2027. This is subject to change, but that's their current estimate for your order.

I concur. Don’t fear the Pirelli all season tires.
Unless it is icy?

So you have 90 days to place your order once invited?

It says in his account that "You will be invited to order in December to February" so he would get an invite email anywhere in that 3 month period when Rivian has an open production slot. I'm only talking about the start of the invitation. Not a timeframe to order after that.

I wonder how long you have once you are invited to order.

Well, they don't have ice studs, but on icy snow they rock. Here is the video of me driving in ice encrusted snow and (although I didn't know it at the time) destroying the lower front facia of the truck.

Looks like Minnesota. The problem is not snow traction. The problem for me is ice. I do not think the rubber compound is as good on ice as some other AS tires, and certainly not as good as 3PSF tires.

Tire Rack does not rate them well comparatively.
Rivian R1T R1S Picked up our R2 this morning (June 29). So far so good. VIN 1588. Screenshot 2026-07-01 at 11.36.18 AM

You can order any time after your invite, all the way until the heat death of the universe. But configuration pricing and availability is not locked in until you place and confirm your order.

The invite is literally nothing more than unlocking the "purchase" button on the configurator. Nothing says you ever have to press that button.

In that case, I’ll have review the current estimated dates when the button unlocks so I can try to time my delivery with the end of our lease in July. No need to have 3 cars with 2 payments.

We have had more cars than drivers before. Had a RAV4, Lexus LS430, the 2022 EV6, and a 1973 Triumph TR6 that I had lovingly restored. The LS was the first to go, then, sadly, the TR6 as my wife wasn’t as happy riding in it as she used to be, especially in the Las Vegas summer heat.

Thank you all for the information. Obviously I’m new on the forum and to Rivian. I appreciate all the insight from you long time owners and early reservations.

I guess the buttons to open the frunk and lift gate are intentional? I assume Rivian did not want to make it too easy or else you would have accidentally openings? Maybe they should’ve stayed with a push button like they have on the R1?
I tried the back window today on an R2 and it wasn't hard to operate at all. Just cover it and hold.
