Had to finally replace my OEM Pirelli’s after 21k miles. Went with the Hankook Ion HTs. $249/tire at Discount Tire. After 150 miles I am very impressed! They seem quieter and the ride is better. Defini recommend these as replacements!

@MichaelT80550 I may be right behind you. My R21 Pirelli’s are almost cooked. Been eyeing the Ions. Drop a photo here if you can.

I've got almost 20k miles on my Hankooks now. Definitely a great ride and handling. Work well in ice as well with all the siping. For me though, the efficiency hasn't been good at anything over 65. They actually perform a tiny bit worse efficiency wise than when I have my 20in Pirellis on. That said, given the cost, even compared to the Michelin Defenders, you can take a bit of efficiency loss and still come out ahead.

Thanks for sharing this range info. I have 20” Toyo Open Country ATs for my winter set of wheels - they were practically brand new when I got my R1T pre-owned. I found a great set of 21” OEM wheels for sale coming off a totaled R1S. I know I’ll eventually want to replace the Pirelli tires and have considered the Michelin Defenders but like you, I’m willing to sacrifice a little efficiency for lowering the cost of a full 4 tire set though my goal is to work the 5-wheel rotation in once I pay for new tires for either 20” winter or 21” 3-season wheel set.

Not sure how helpful I can be on range info given my driving habits since I’m retired. LivingInKaos posted good info above.

I was under the impression that the Hankooks had lower rolling resistance than the OEMs, but I can’t swear either way.

I like the 21” handbooks on the R1S. More of a thump over expansion joints where the OEM 21” tires sounded like a drum. Also, the Hankooks bulge out more and will protect the wheel better.

Mine are too new for efficiency data. Keep in mind old tires have much lower rolling resistance than new tires. On our R1T I was at 2.2 M/Kwh on my 20” OEM AT’s when new. Got all the way to 2.5 before I replaced them. Back to 2.2 with an identical replacement set when new.

I hadn't noticed the "bulge" but now that you mention, it - yes, definitely a difference from the OEMs.

Thx for the replies-- still waiting for a consensus on the 21's-- not enough data yet. Hankooks heavier than OEM but lower rolling reasistance. If overall range is higher I'm in-- but not clear to me yet. Hope more people will share if they try them. I think I have about 12 months left on my OEM tires. Ilike the idea of deeper treads and tread warranty, but also hoping to eek out a few more miles/KW

How do you know the Hankook HTs have lower rolling resistance than the OEM 21s?

Good question. I don’t really know, but that’s what I’ve read. At least on Rivian tracker tire guide they seem to have more efficiency. But I’m waiting for more confirmation.

I love @Rivian Roamer and the insights the data from that platform provides.

However, I am not sure you can draw a conclusion from 10 vehicles. Especially when the efficiency differences are so small between the tires. There are so many variables that impact efficiency, and that number is an average that has no controls over the other variables that impact efficiency.

Here is the data for those who are wondering what we are talking about:

Rivian R1T R1S Hankook Ion HT 21” tires 1783387374975-bc

I compared only the 22s because that is the most efficient setup in the Gen2 trucks.

The Gen1 21s show a big difference. This may be what you are referring to:

Rivian R1T R1S Hankook Ion HT 21” tires 1783387334619-p5

Why is there such a big difference on the 21" wheels compared to the 22" wheels? I think because there are other variables that have impacted the efficiency of those 10 vehicles that are more significant than the tires. IDK.
