R2 Build Quality Review by Out of Spec

I don't normally care too much for this guy's reviews, as I'm not interested in "detailers" wanting to sell me something, but given my interest in the R2, his review seemed pretty fair. My only concern in this would be the inconsistency with frunk and rear glass operation.
My vehicles get dirty, and I'm OK with that. My vehicles get scratches and dings, and I'm OK with that. Just don't leave me stranded on a trip, and all will be good.

The rear window opening is a gimmick, IMO. I doubt people open it often unless they want all the dust from the road inside the vehicle.

Since the rear hatch doesn't have a programmable limit and we have a low garage ceiling, the rear window will be how we load stuff in the back. I suspect we will use it nearly every day (as often as we use the hatch in the Forester now).

I'm the same way. I don't watch Colton's (sp?) stuff unless it's a car I'm interested in. Nothing in the video really gave me pause other than the charge port door (which everyone seems to say is cheap as hell and the fitment is hit or miss) and this sloppy glued-on stuff:

It's a good thing that both of those can be easily corrected, though.

Baloney. I’ve driven R2 7 times now and the window was down on every drive. Having all the fresh air, hearing the birds. Love everything about it. And once it’s in my garage, hauling lumber etc will never have been easier.

I'm gonna blame the whole panel gap issue on Tesla. Back when the Model 3 and then the Model Y first came out, there were some absolutely atrocious panel gaps in each vehicle. Back then, Tesla's reply was most always "it's within spec" while never publicly disclosing what the spec was until much later in the game.

Once the spec was actually released (or leaked?) to the public people started measuring gaps all around the vehicle looking for flaws. It then became part of the buyer pre sign-on-the-line inspection for factory delivered vehicles.

It was mostly forum driven in the end....

Yeah, all the debate got so bad people were scared to take delivery without running some forum developed checklist that ran to pages long it seemed. Self inflicted issue as the early cars did have many issues but it really got out of hand, seems to have finally subsided but it took years.

I suspect a software update could fix this, no? Is it a physical limitation of the button? Edit: check that, guess it’s not possible, strange omission IMO. Resort to protective foam noodles I guess.

Out of Spec Bits with RivianTracker did a nice review of the underbody of the R2 on July 25th on YouTube. Not sure how to copy it to this forum.

That's what I'm talking about, lol. Kudos to them for getting it on a lift. Might be able to fit 33"s with mild lift, but beyond that will be tough w/out more modifications.

Side note, how many damn channels does Out of Spec have at this point? Kyle knows how to work YT, so there must be an advantage to splitting up all the content this way.

I see rear windows down on 4R's all of the time . But, you are right; you will get dust/dirt inside. Does anyone know if the Coastal Cloud leadliner is fabric or something easier to clean? I had a Tesla w/a light-colored headliner, and it got very dirty quickly while driving the dirt roads in my neighborhood with the windows down. It was a PITA to clean.

It looks like the build quality is real good to me. I could care less about the hard plastics down low.

My theory on the plastic is that it will be annoying when it has a couple scuffs, but will look cool when it has hundreds of scuffs

I actually prefer that to carpet as carpet is a pet hair magnet and it is difficult to vacuum the pet hair out of.

Fully agree. Also little bits of cardboard from carrying packages and many other things that tend to embed themselves in carpet.

I don't think we know either way whether it is a physical limitation or just a missing software feature. It depends on the position feedback available to the door controller. If they can reliably detect the current position (not just based on motor operating time), then they should be able to implement this. If they don't have an accurate position sensor, then it may not be possible. We'll have to see if Rivian makes a comment or includes it in a future update.

As I understand it this was an issue raised with the R1 and never implemented so time will tell.

Prefer a summary then a long as video. Let me guess overall quality was good but a few issue were discovered that only a trained detailer would notice.
