I was an avid user of Rivian's "formerly" standard voice control feature when I purchased my R1T earlier this year> I, like I assume thousands more Rivian customers us voice commands mainly to call people from my address book that's loaded with over 1000 contacts. I'm now forced to scroll to locate the person I'm trying to call. This is a major inconvenience and has totally pissed me off. I beginning to think Rivian is transitioning to manufacturing vending machines of options to "subscribe to" instead of providing driver-useful features that are standard in most competitive vehicles (Don't even get me started with the ApplePlay thing....). This trend at Rivian is very disappointing. Pretty much every new vehicle allows drivers to safely access their address book and make calls among many other tasks using their voice. I read several rebuttals to people mentioning the safety aspect. I don't quite understand why anyone wouldn't think the vehicle is significantly less safe thanks to the deletion of voice control. Scrolling through a voluminous address book versus having the ability to "ask" the vehicle to "Call Jane Doe' . This is very obviously and significantly more dangerous. Since when is it legal to remove a standard feature after one purchases it. Isn't that a classic bait and switch to the nth degree. Not sure if Rivian reviews these posts - let's hope so. I'm betting we'll hear of a class action lawsuit soon over this post-purchase standard feature deletion. Very surprising Rivian didn't think their loyal customers would be pissed. I know I certainly am. Bragging about my satisfaction with my Rivian vehicle has changed to words of buyer-beware - Rivian. What were you thinking?

I think part of why people aren't "up in arms" about this issue is that you can still talk to your phone's built-in voice assistant to accomplish most of these things; "Hey Google, Call Mom" works just fine.

Also, Rivian Assistant isn't on R2 yet, so Rivian hasn't taken away any features on R2. With R1S/R1T you'd have a point, but that's a different forum...

Other threads exist. They are supposed to be rolling out a replacement.

I actually don't care about phone calls, as I mostly use messengers. But I would like to have Rivian AI voice assistant for every feature, instead of diving into onscreen menus. That would significantly mitigate the problem with missing physical controls.

I’ve never used voice commands while driving. I’ve never needed to. I’ve tried it before in my Tesla, and it completely sucks so bad that it rarely did what I wanted. Calling was an easy two tap.
That’s why I’m not up in arms.

The assistant will be able to handle basic commands locally.

GM dropped Alexa the same time Rivian did. There's probably more going on behind the scenes we don't know about.

Im confused. Mine still work by just saying what I want it to do. I can now voice to text, argue with AI, etc with all the updates so Im happy.
the difference is the OP is complaining because he is too cheap to pay for Connect+ which pays for the network connectivity and cloud compute required to run the current implementation of the Rivian Assistant. With Alexa, he was able to execute basic commands even without Connect+ so it's a loss of functionality.

Jim…breathe…it’s OK. You lived decades without it. Unfortunate? Sure. Class action…haha, I don’t think so. You want SAFE?….don’t talk on the phone while driving!

Yeah I do this now with carplay and have used Bluetooth to do this since Siri debuted. Use Siri for texts too. OP—use social media to engagement farm.

I use/used Siri since my phone is always mounted close by, even with RA because I forget sometimes.
