Got our first R1S in May 2023 (we also have an R1t that we got in Sept 2002- so Rivian family here) and never had a single problem with the R1S (or the T). Put 45/50,000 miles on it and debated trading it in for a 2nd generation. There are quite a few discussion threads on whether to switch or not. So sharing my thoughts after owning a 2nd generation R1S for a few weeks.
First, I was fully happy with my 1st Gen launch edition. I didn’t have a single issue with it. So why did I change it: had to change all four tires (still had the original AT tires) and we had been already wondering whether to switch. So we were faced with do it now or change the tires and keep it for a while longer. We drive a lot and the upgrades in uhf system and future updates plus longer range made sense for us. We often drive from WA to OR and if we don’t have time to charge to 100%, we have to make a stop to charge. The trade in value was very good plus the financial incentives were such that changing it now vs later and keeping the 2nd gen longer made sense for us. This is all personal of course.
Now, we’ve been finding the 2nd generation really amazing to drive. We have the quads with bronze wheels. The drive quality is amazing, similar to the T, the uhf system is performing really well, and the horse power… wow (not that we needed it but wow). The car is lighter, it takes turns so well. We like the sun protection from the sunroof and I personally really like the new finishes in the black interior (the wood is super nice).
While I really hesitated in trading my launch edition for this one, because I loved that car, so far I don’t regret the decision. We notice all the work Rivian has done in making the R1S a superb SUV.
