2026 Rivian R1T Tri
Well my first fairly long road trip went very well. The R1T is my first electric vehicle, so I didn't have any experience for trips. My round trip covered 326miles from Huntsville to Atlanta. I started with 90% charge and ended up with 32% after doing a splash and dash at a Tesla charger in Atlanta (just $8 worth). I didn't really need to do the charge, but since I've never charged outside of my home (my R1T is my daily work commuter) I wanted to try that experience.

Overall it was a very pleasant drive using the hands free mode for most of the way. I really don't feel like the hands free mode is at a state where we should be charged for it, yet. There were a few times where I had to grab control because either it asked me to around curves, or it was actually messing up. The hands free also dropped quite a few times and I had to re-engage it. Also the automatic lane change only worked less than 50% of the times I tried it on the interstate freeway.

IMO Rivian need to get it working better before they charge us for it. I will not be subscribing until they do. I don't mind paying for it when it works well. If I had a Tesla, I would most definitely pay the extra for hands free driving because it does make a huge difference in long trips.

I fully agree that Rivian's self driving is still not ready for prime time, and certainly not worth paying for. I generally only use it on longer road trips (I have done a 2k mi trip and a 5k mi trip). It is handy and helps relieve fatigue, but still far too many glitches and unexpected behavior to be worthy of a subscription.

I have a 2025 R1S Tri and love it. Adventure on!
