If the fuel economy is doubled and the same fuel is burned that would be 2X the miles driven.... more roads to build & maintain.
Absolutely. Maintaining a road network today has to be a nightmare compared to 40 years ago. More people, more wear and tear, more bureaucracy in the way, more expensive, etc.

This company is next door to my office. I've seen their huge solar array and they are able to somehow (so they claim) make gas out of thin air using only solar power to make it 100% renewable.

https://prometheusfuels.com/

I have no idea of the process or how hard it would be to scale but to compete with oil it would have to scale massively.

At the end of the day it's still gas and has all the drawbacks of burning gas but it's an interesting idea and I've been following them for a while to see what happens.

Maybe they will get some attention now that gas is getting expensive.

There’s a number of different companies experimenting with it. The science of capturing CO2 and recombining it to an hydrocarbon fuel isn’t hard it’s just trying to scale it to be a sustainable business that’s difficult. Formula 1 this year is now using what they say is “sustainable fuel” from CO2 capture and other sources.

Porsche has a plant in South America that they claim can do this, but the fuel is REALLY expensive. And they don't actually pull the carbon from the air yet, they ship it in.

Oil nearly hit $120 last night before settling back. Wholesale Gas (RBOB) is at $3.00. It has been as high as $3.22. Wholesale is generally $1.00 less than retail prices. Keep in mind that is BEFORE taxes are added.

I always thought the gas prices dropped in the winter because they’re using a less refined, dirtier crude to make Winter blend. Summer blend is more refined and as a result more expensive to produce. Also fuel companies like to jack up the prices during Summer travel season.
Correct. And each state, county and local municipality can create sub-standards for cleanliness making refineries work harder to calculate and refine blends within their service regions. Add on steady demand refinements for aviation, diesel grades, construction and farm equipment. Oh and less we forget military fuel needs domestically, the job refineries provide is significant.

California miles driven by year. 3.28BN miles. Just level with 2020 Covid dip.

Operation Praying Mantis II can fix rising oil prices in short order. We did it before, we can do it even easier this time. Still though, it's really not that big of a deal. Prices are still reasonable, but people like to hype it up in the news.

I guess the Board of Peace got bored of peace. :CWL:
But but but it's a war to create peace. Like, the war to end all wars. We know how that went. The "good guys" think they're taking out the "bad guys". The "bad guys" think they are the "good guys". History repeats.

I don’t know that a nearly $1.50 increase in a week falls into the reasonable range. Between fuel to drive to work and heating the house that’s close to an additional $300/month for the remaining winter months. For a lot of Americans that is a lot of money.

Gas at the pumps is up about 45 cents here since the War started. And really, it's still cheap overall.

Highest prices for regular gas in last 10 years was June 2022. Just under $5/gal. Oil prices at the time were $122/barrel.

Current AAA reg avg is $3.32. We have a ways to go.
going back a little further, adjusted for inflation, average price in July 2008 was higher than in June 2022.

bigly.

I think people really don't understand how cheap gas is now, especially when you consider adjusting for inflation. We're spoiled with cheap gas prices.

Still cheap doesn’t mean much to people when their expenses suddenly increase by nearly 50%.
This is such a broad brush comment that it is completely not true.

The gas expense going up $0.50/gal is at the most 10% where the gas price was $5/gal, which you can count the number of states in a single hand. And it also depends on how much a households spends on gas as percent of the total expenses.

Even when the cost of transportation filters down to product prices, its not going to raise the prices by 50%.

Just keeping it real...
