Did Rivian confirm if they're using real sensors in the R2 like the R1? Specifically rain-sensors and parking sensors???

I have a Model Y and it uses the camera as a rain-sensor (awful) and cameras for parking sensors (extremely inaccurate and useless at night).

Hoping Rivian won't cheap out and create supbar customer experience.

Rivian has stated even more recently that they are using multiple sensor types to ensure a level of redundancy in the platform and as mentioned, one sensor is good in condition A while another is good in condition B, by having both, you ensure a quality user experience.

The clip starts where Vidya, Rivians Sr VP of Electrical Hardware touches on this topic.

There is no reason to not think R2 won’t have a rain sensor and USS.
I get worried since I know they need better margins - so I figured they'll remove stuff like Tesla did.

It's funny one of coolest things that sold me on Tesla 8 years ago was the parking sensor UI (it showed an arc with how many inches you were away from the object). Now they cheaped out - not a good look:

No one can know for sure unless they are on the build team; in that case, they couldn't tell us. The R2 will be reaching the lower price point due to the smaller size and less complex suspension so I wouldn't worry too much about no sensors.

Looks like the R2 won't have traditional parking sensors...They're using a radar (dual-radar).

Since these will be mounted in the corners - will they be useless with close accuracy (example: less than 2ft away)????

The corner radars you're talking about are supposed to replicate the functionality of ultrasonics.

For me in my R1S I just use the birds-eye view for tight parking. I like it much better than the sensors on my 2016 Model S that gives distance readouts. The cameras on the R2 should be much better than my G1 R1S some imagine the birds-eye display will be even better.

that makes sense. However over this past winter, my cameras in my Tesla have been covered in salt/slush. I don’t know how Rivian handles that in 360 birdseye view but the Tesla warns about parking assist issues when that happens.

Sensors are a nice redundancy in my opinion (USS seem to work fine if they have some slush and salt on them).

this will be interesting to see how the R2’s dual radars work out…

Since Launch Edition R2 will have both dual mode radar and the new 65 MP cameras, we should get good feedback once they are delivered. Big question is whether the software will be worked out enough.

Here's a quote from one of the radar suppliers about how this might work:
The corner radar increases vertical field of view resolution compared with the previous generation, with horizontal discrimination improved by 25% and vertical discrimination enabled through what Aptiv describes as cutting-edge sensing technology. The system supports close-range, low-speed scenarios including frontal automatic emergency braking, automated parking and object avoidance.

Yep.

And that's substantially different than Tesla attempting to use vision (cameras) for close proximity object detection. People with some expertise in that space knew it was a poor choice - people in the cult just went "HERF DERF ELON IS SMERT!" 🤣

Tesla rain wiper automation has always been terrible, at least since 2019, regardless of technology.

Yeah, my wipers would start up on a dry, sunny day, nothing beats the sound of a dry wiper dragging across a windshield. :p

Here's hoping the R2 has temp sensors. Tesla did, but then decided to use some stupid GPS based interpolation that of course assumes a cellular connection.

Especially in the mountains I want to know, as accurately as possible, what the temp is when it's near freezing. Even a temp point a half mile away might well be 1000s of feet higher or lower and useless.

I totally forgot about that! My Model 3 had camera based rain sensing and it sucked! Hopefully, Rivian won't make a similar mistake.
