Would you go with 20" wheels or 21" wheels on Launch Edition R2?

20s all day.

Like you said, way more options - and that matters for long term cost of ownership and flexibility. There's a lot of R1 owners with 21s who wish they had gotten the 20s or 22s instead.

BTW, o one here has experience with the 20s vs 21s on the R2. Check back in 4-5 months once they begin deliveries to non-employees.

Until tire industry catches up, there is only one tire option in 225/55R21. The stock tire.

According to Rivian AI chat the tire is 275/55R21. Michelin does have that in the Defender, I put Defenders on my R1S and am very happy with them.

That's wrong and correct only for R1. R2 size is 225 mm wide version of Scorpion MS. R2 is a smaller and lighter car. The tires and wheel barrels are not as wide as R1's.

All R2 tires are 225 wide.

Plenty of people are getting out of the 21" on R1 vehicles.
Save yourself the frustration and start with 20"

Agree with above commets ^^^ Roads are too terrible (pot holes) for anything over a 20 imo.

Test drove a Gen 1 R1S in Brooklyn on 22's back in 2023 and quickly changed my config to 20's. I can't believe they would even allow test drives on 22's which felt like absolute crap in city driving.

Main con - tire noise, though these don't seem as aggressive as your typical AT, so may not be much of an issue.

Matt from CarWow described his driving impressions in a R2 with AT tires, both on a winding canyon road and freeway. On the freeway he said he couldn't hear any road noise and also stated the R2 has acoustic glass for the drivers (and presumably passengers) window and the windscreen.

20s. Before getting my R1S, I test drove all the different sizes and settled on the 20s for the above mentioned reasons.
