So why do they include air conditioning for free? Naive to expect them to offer it for free, especially if it's as important to so many people. Given that, either everyone pays more for a Rivian, or they could split it off as a premium subscription.
$0 per month- exactly the same as what Apple charges car makers to support carplay. And, the same as what it costs in a Civic/Corolla/every other car.
A large part of why I want carplay is to avoid monthly services. I have 7 cars. Paying a monthly fee for each is a non starter.
I have one...
I mean, only one way to find out-- run a poll and ask what phone people use.
I own/run NAM3forum.net (a forum for BMW M3s). iPhones access the site 11x more often than other phones. It's a cheaper car, so I'd expect a bigger spread here.
No, I'm saying Apple's marketshare goes up with wealth.
e.g. business insider:
Given that apple's overall smartphone marketshare is ~60%, pretty save to say that trend continues up curve.

You can run CarPlay as an app within android. “CarPlay” is just basically a remote display/touch interface, with everything actually running on the phone. CarPlay apps for android just turn the android device into a remote iPhone display.
This is the exactly how I run wireless CarPlay in my...
They said they expect to make an average of $16,000 in post sale subscription revenue per truck sold-- so no small percent.
Also, you can certainly have differentiated carplay, especially if you have a lot of, or large, screens.
Carplay in a Civic looks like this:
But carplay can fill all...
Yep, this is certainly the why.
The question is, will that model hold up once there's sufficient EV truck supply to meet EV truck demand. Right now they have no consequences from this, because however many potential customers they're losing, they have more demand than supply anyway (since their...
Apple has 60% of the total cell phone market share in the USA, but, of people who have enough money to buy a car new (which is what their quote cited-- new car buyers), they're MUCH higher-- likely >95%.
I'm fine waiting-- I have a truck that's fine until one exists that isn't a downgrade...
Not zero value add-- If Rivian doesn't add carplay, I will buy a silverado EV. If they do add carplay, I will buy a rivian. They have until the 2nd year of production of the silverado EV to do it, before I'm lost as a customer forever.
A good friend of mine is in the exact same position-- he...
I found Apple's move to spatial audio hugely impactful with my Atmos home setup...
... I can't hear any difference between their default 256kbps AAC streamed files and the lossless files, of either level of lossless.
Perhaps I shouldn't have said full quality, as that does imply lossless. How about... indistinguishable from full quality audio?
(unlike bluetooth streamed audio)
Doesn't have to be wired-- Apple gets full quality audio through CarPlay (which runs over bluetooth AND wifi). But, yes, bluetooth audio is compromised.
I use Audible for books, yes-- which I interface with in the other 5 cars using CarPlay :P
Bluetooth sound quality is crap.
Tunein and Spotify only exist if you pay the subscription fee (rivian has estimated they will make an average of $15,500 per owner off subscription based features).
Using Rivian native anything sucks if you use more than one car (I have 5, truck would be 6)...
CP/AA existing doesn’t mean the stock interface ceases to exist. If you’re doing something where the stock interface is better, you can just use it.
… I use the stock interface in my cars almost never. Most people think BMW’s idrive is the best setup in the industry.
Can really kick it old school with the Rivian. Paper maps, garage door opener clipped onto the mirror, phone suction cupped to the windshield. All the best things.
You are captive to one option when CP/AA does not exist. If it does exist, you get to choose between Rivian native, Carplay, or Android Auto... and ALL of the apps within CarPlay and Android auto.
If it doesn't exist, all you get is Rivian native and any apps they choose to grace you with, for...
