US Code of Federal Regulations 571.110 S4.2.2 - "When passenger car tires are installed on an MPV, truck, bus, or trailer, each tire's load rating is reduced by dividing it by 1.10 before determining, under S4.2.2.1, the sum of the maximum load ratings of the tires fitted to an axle."

I'll add a better explanation in the article, but according to the regulation "When passenger car tires are installed on an MPV, truck, bus, or trailer, each tire's load rating is reduced by dividing it by 1.10"
2679 / 1.10 = 2,435.45
MPV = multipurpose passenger vehicles or SUVs (*edit may...
Welp it has been a busy week. First, I returned the 115s and bought LTs, installed them at DT with no issues so I'm glad all that's done.
Second, I did some light bedtime reading of the transportation Federal Regulations and found out why DT won't install 115s and why Rivian quickly got rid of...
That rules out a majority of 22” tire options and many popular 20” options. It’s just odd that Les Schwab measures things differently and even Discount disagrees with their policy and is trying to get this changed.
I am working with Rivian’s Director of America, Service to update their internal...
That stinks. They’ve treated me really well for 14 years and even in this situation have tried to make it work but also don’t want to get fired if they’re caught. I’m just trying to decide what to do because like you, I don’t want to not have future service.
I get it but that still ignores the manufacturer recommendation and the fact they still exceed the GVWR by over 2,200 lbs which is Les Scwab's main concern
His other post was saying that the SL tires get derated by 9% which brings them down to 2,437 lbs but I'm confused. Les Schwab had absolutely zero issue with these tires and actually laughed when I told them the tires specs and the GVWR. I trust them probably a little more. Maybe he can explain...
In that post you wrote "The R1T on the other hand has no problem with 115 rating...likely the cause of all the confusion to begin with...." I'm in an R1T and wanting to install 115s.
They are flat out wrong in this situation. They are playing it way to safe and Les Schwab is willing to install them as they exceed the GVWR by nearly 2,200 lbs which is their big measurement. Remember, Rivian 22" originally came with 115H tires and Discount knows this, they just have to follow...
It's 81 lbs per tire. 2679 on 115s and 2756 on 116s so 324 lbs total. Either way, Les Schwab didn't care as long as the tires exceeded the GVWR which the 115s do by nearly 2,200 lbs... Discount is just being ridiculous in this situation.
For what wheel size though... 22" right? Their issue is that because mine has 20" from the factory, that's what they have to follow. If I pulled in with 22" wheels, they'd need to make sure my tires met or exceeded the original 20" specs which is very dumb.
He coated my wheels as well! He did a great job. I can easily find another shop that’s willing to put the tires on, but was hoping to stick with DT for the certificate and since they’re five minutes from me and have taken good care of me for 15+ years.
I know. But their certificate is basically the only one that covers off-road damage which is nice. They also are willing to install the tires for free with certificate purchase. I off-road all the time so my chances of damaging a tire are higher than most and this part is important to me.
