Id go for the two above the bed + 4 on the hitch since you’ve already got the hitch. It’s not bad loading a gravel bike on the bed, a lot easier than above the cab. My wife sometimes has struggled with the full suspension on to the bed.

It doesn’t work in tunnels, if that’s where you experienced it. Also sometimes recent construction/active construction zones are a problem, so if there’s an area they just finished it may not work.
