The Gen 1 R1S wasn't widely available until Spring of 2023, barely a year before they announced the massive gen 2 overhaul in June 2024. I'd say they have a pretty good track record of announcing major overhauls shortly after launching a model. And Rivian is the one calling it the "Gen 3...
The only change they've admitted is lidar and RAP1. Look at how much changed with R1 gen 2 - cameras, computers, matrix headlights, UWB keys, heat pump, the whole suspension, etc. and they didn't hint at any of that until it was ready to go to market despite that kind of redesign taking years...
That was the plan when I made the reservation, but seeing them go down the same path they did with the Gen 1 R1 I have no interest in being the one left holding the bag again with this half-baked in between 2026 R2. Once they do the gen 2 "re-launch edition" like they did with R1 in 27 or 28...
R1 has laminated glass on the windshield, roof, and front sides. Rear sides and rear glass is tempered.
I would be surprised if R2 doesn't have the same setup - it's become pretty standard for new cars in the last few years.
I’ve been EV-only since 2017ish and my charging habits have stayed mostly the same. Set the car to 90% and plug in when I get home and park. I make sure my charging handle is right next to the port in the garage so it takes five seconds and that’s pretty much all the thought I ever give it...
OP included pictures, there's a neutral so it would be a 14-50. You can install a 6-50 with only hot-hot-ground too though, as there are some EVSEs with 6-50 plugs (like the popular and excellent Chargepoint Home Flex for example) they're just less common.
What would be fun is if idle fees charged at a station went into a kitty that discounted the rate for active charging. Don't publish it anywhere but just at the end of the session when they send the receipt email add a note that says "Tip your hat to the slow-poke idling on 4A - they saved you...
Talk of a media embargo ending on the 10th plus Q4 earnings on the 12th plus the fact that this is the longest gap they've ever had between updates since the beginning makes me think this is going to be a big one. Fingers crossed for AI assistant and texting at the very least, if not more.
Okay so you basically just need a Deutsch DT 3-pin plug and receptacle, plus the pins and wedge locks. I was going to make a list of all the part numbers but essentially you just need these three things off of Amazon:
Deutsch connectors and pins:

So I just completed this mod on my truck. I put the outlet in the same spot as OP but rather than fishing the cable all the way up to the gear tunnel I made a little add-on harness to tap the 12V from the air compressor that’s right there without cutting or splicing anything. Completely...
I don't love that this is a video, but I do love that you made the thumbnail explain the whole thing so I don't have to watch the video. :giggle:
What a great, simple quality of life idea! Bravo
The solution is to charge the vehicle the same way you export power to the house, via DC. If your charge station is a 10-30kW bidirectional DC charger it can both charge the vehicle over the DC pins and then switch to export in an outage without you having to unplug.
I don't think Rivian will...
Any update on this? I'm curious how much of an impact your doubled capacity has on the vampire drain. I've also been playing with the idea of swapping out the garbage 18AH battery with a big 100-200 AH battery mounted in a box in the bed or on a bracket somewhere in the front with a cutout /...
I was pleasantly surprised that both Superchargers I stopped at on my last two road trips in SoCal had been upgraded to V4 cabinets. I know there's still plenty of short cords out there but they do seem to be making good progress on this.
I love the glove box but I don’t love the double-glovebox. Feels like the designer being petty that everyone hated his glovebox-less design for the R1 lol.
NACS in the right place, better cameras and lidar are my high points. The potential for electronic button switches for the door handles is...
Definitely interested, I'd buy the kit. Especially if you made a Y harness with the same plugs:

so it was plug and play with no t-taps or anything. I'd still personally drill the hole in the side panel for a similar...
Tesla Superchargers (that you have access to without an adapter) make up more than half of all public charging stations by plug count.
Most CCS stations (the ones that you need an adapter for) have 4-8 plugs and are always busy, meanwhile Tesla has several locations along major highways with...
