For that, you'll need to get rock sliders. They are much stronger than running boards. Bad news is that they are also quite a bit costlier. I have a set on my R1S from weistec.com which very sturdy and can be used as lift points. Install was easy and imo they they look factory spec.

I've have an R1S Tri since last December. I normally use All Purpose mode, but often switch to Conserve mode on longer road trips for better highway efficiency. I have not noticed any "clunking" sounds.
