It's more complicated than just the trade in value Rivian offers. In BC that amount gets reduced from the vehicle cost, which can put you in a totally different luxury tax bracket, saving you loads of money at the end of the day (yes, that's how it works, it's not like income tax brackets).
I think the biggest caveat worth adding is the starting SOC. Thinking more about this, I bet the Rivian vs Cybertruck range-added/time graph would look wildly different if you plugged at 20%.
The classic 1 hour long video from Out of Spec explains (and adds other context), but tldw: it's result from their own test, which they decided to use as their own "standard":
I'm glad to see at least some of the test variables included in the graph mouse-over info (software version notably...
Not quite so simple. Here's the second graph which shows the user experience, taking into account efficiency*
* of course there are STILL more caveats and variables, like test conditions, and that this data is derived from a theoretical max charging curve if there was no thermal derating...
So I don't know a whole lot about the EPA range testing, but does Rivian have control over these coefficient numbers? That could explain the better (rated) "efficiency" in the max pack:
Large pack [1]:
Max pack [2]:

Rivian delivered something on time! ?
In all seriousness, I fully support their move. Having free charging makes for a poor user experience because of bad incentives so people use the limited DCFC stations inappropriately.
I'm also skeptical a different battery can change the efficiency, but I'm no chemical or electrical engineer.
How is the MPGe number calculated I wonder. Is it just derived based on the EPA cycle range and energy required to recharge the vehicle? We do know that manufacturers can adjust the...
Would breaking the brittle plastic be covered under warranty? Seems to me it would be very easy to call it user-inflicted damage, like the thin glass roof. I guess we'll be finding out.
I would bet the former, Rivian probably fudged EPA the numbers a bit on the max pack to break the 400 mile mark just for marketing reasons. Which if true, would make the max pack even more of a worse deal. The radio silence from Rivian on the details is further evidence to a disappointing reality.
This is an interesting point. I just today noticed the warranty page specifically lists the Large pack. We shall see what the max pack warranty looks like s00n.
Looks like that wording is new as of a month ago:
I'm just curious if anyone's gone through this yet, since it seems like there are many non-serviceable areas across the US (and 90%+ of Canada). How would service issues be handled? I guess for smaller issues, like QC failures, it's on the customer to bring in the vehicle to a service center and...
If the max pack is just a chemistry change, why can't it be offered with the quad motor? MAXimum margin model?
I noticed that the EPA website still doesn't list the max pack models, I was curious to see what the efficiency MPGe numbers are compared to the other dual motors. That might give us...
Seems there's a long wait for customer support after every delay announcement (I'm on number 8 or something by now?). I think you mostly got unlucky with timing.
