So, did Rivian just enable a direct competitor, Scout, with their SDV deal with VW? They must really have been desperate, or they just got played. Yes, most car companies compete in many different markets, but this is a brand dedicated to offroad EVs. Sounds familiar. Jeep and Daimler are...
Look at the R2, though. It’s a clone of the R1. Rivian doesn’t want to change, they don’t know how to manufacture and it was hard enough doing the original design. Any new design will have big quality problems. Also, they copy Tesla and Tesla’s plan is to run the 3 and Y designs into the ground...
Love the 800V charging. It means shorter queues at fast chargers during peak periods (eventually). When I road trip to very remote areas I can frequently spend up to three hours a day fast charging. Recent example: a trip to the outskirts of Stanley, Idaho: 176 minutes charging one way to have...
Love the on-board ICE, simply because some DC fast chargers are either out of order or turn out to have massive lines. In California, some supercharger lines can be insane. When road tripping, you now have the option of skipping a charge in exceptional circumstances.
Also, an on-board generator...
I don’t personally believe Rivian will be making 400K vehicles in 2027 or 2028. I do believe they want to, but my experience is that they don’t really know how to do manufacturing. Or software. Or service, now that I think about it.
Totally agree. It's a non-issue with a little practice. And when you want to brake hard, strong regen has a faster response time than normal brakes.
That said, the duals have weaker regeneration than the quads, in my experience, so if you really wanted weaker regen (and you don't), you can get...
This is pretty cool, and I can't wait to try it. I think it's easy to get Hasselhoff; he's not working much these days. I don't think it cost Rivian much at all.
As an aside, Rivian uses my WiFi for most of these uploads, which I pay for. Is Rivian going to pay me for the use of my bandwidth? I don’t use Driver+ so I don’t get much value from it otherwise. They’re monetizing my camera data, they could at least give me free LTE.
I’m not sure they’re paying much, if anything, because in return Google gets access to Rivian users’ maps queries, which is useful for enhancing search relevance and also the business of various locations by time of day (restaurants). They can also perhaps sell ads in the search results...
You're not being pedantic. My iPhone hotspot turns off at random times, and it's a pain to reenable it. Also, using the hotspot drains your phone battery, and sometimes it's not charging, because it's in your pocket, a backpack, or all the on-board Rivian chargers are taken by other phones...
I've been rocking the R5s for about two weeks on the R1T. The R1S has LT3s. So far I've appreciated the smooth ride. The tires do seem to kick water up onto the windshield, like a fountain, which is a phenomenon I've never seen before, and find amusing.
