You don’t retool a factory to continue building the prior model; whatever the ‘refresh’ actually is, is what is currently rolling off the factory now, thus it will either be for sale soon or Rivian won’t be selling R1S’s all summer since current stock of pre-shutdown R1S inventory is extremely low

You’ll be more than fine. If you’re taking a long road trip I’d rent an ICE vehicle to avoid the specific headaches EV trips bring (& especially so while awaiting a Tesla charger adapter), but otherwise you should be good to go.

if the hardware is updated to take advantage of future driver+ updates that’s a good reason to wait & further future proof your vehicle.

GPU & Camera/Sensor upgrades can be fairly significant. The difference between the Intel & upgraded AMD Teslas was worth waiting.

Unfortunately the company wants to sell vehicles, not just batteries so doubtful future battery tech will be backwards compatible

i think at least part of this is some sort of hope from (some) existing owners that something better than what they currently own doesn’t start rolling off the line. Odd thought process, but some people are weird like that. People seem to be forgetting that the R1 platform is 6 years old now.
