I didn't think that's the implication or at least not the doesn't reason for eyes off.
The assumption from autonomy day was:
Lidar == eyes-off
It's not, "no eyes-off until lidar can train the fleet."
Oh I agree in that I also prefer driving. But there's going to be such a huge feature difference in these generations that 3-6 months worth of buyers are going to feel passed up when the software is finally ready.
You should wait. Take that advice from a very early tech adopter that included 2 early Model S (2014 and 2016). Missed AP by 1 month on first one, missed refresh by 1 month on the second. Lidar is going to enable hands off/eyes off PtP, according to autonomy day. And that's a pretty big feature...
Nope. Not unless you are going to give me real value from a system that I don't have to babysit 100% of the time, and gives us meaningful features like PtP/eyes off/all roads/etc. Keeping in mind that current gen2 will never get those truly meaningful features.
Mind you, if you are going to...
No it isn't!
Physical button, not something I have to hunt for. We need a tactile, muscle memory button. Ever tried to pull out of the driveway and think "wish the birds eye view could show me if there are any children around"?
Tiny quick settings button and then marginally less tiny mirror...
Have you seen the fan renderings from 2018? Every single one was a million times better than what actually came out on stage. They should just use one of those.
Here are the high points of APv1:
1. Activate anywhere there are dashes on the road (and even some streets where it just detects a curb, but I really wouldn't trust it there)
2. Traffic aware cruise control meaning it will vary speed based on the car in front otherwise, drive the set speed
3...
It was the version before they introduced the "drive into the lake feature". I think I'm safe.
Edit: oh, and don't get me wrong. My version of autopilot has tried to kill me numerous times over the last decade.
So just to be clear, the Autonomy+ feature set, for $50 per month or $2500 one-time, is no better than my 2016 Model S with Mobile Eye Gen 1 autopilot?
Oh wait, it's actually worse because my Tesla can park itself right now and not "sometime in 2026".
Unbelievable....
Yeah, I still don't think that's always a guarantee. I have a UniFi 7 LR access point aimed directly at the front bumper of the r1s, and I'm a connect plus subscriber, and I have a home assistant notification set up for the software update flag. It's always a crap shoot on when I get notified.
I'll donate to the charity of your choosing if you can get us a shortcut button to fold the mirrors on the steering wheel, and get geo-fenced folding mirrors..... not joking.
