The way they talked about needing to acquire millions of miles and LiDAR milage data before L4 can be achieved, it probably will be a standard equipment if nothing else other than collect driving data - very much like every Tesla is capable of FSD to collect data.

I believe ALL R2's from the start will be equipped with LiDAR. Makes so much more manufacturing sense to do so. It just won't be turned on until the SW is ready and regulatory compliance has been met.

Yes they said starting very soon gen 2 R1's will be able to do hands-off self driving. The eyes-off will be only on gen 3 R2 vehicles. So gen 2 is effectively legacy/old hw and will be less and less capable as the time goes by when compared to R2

RJ just killed off R1. R2 is gen 3 including LiDAR and Rivian developed AI chip. This is exactly the reason holding onto EVs for more than 3~5 yrs is just like computers - outdated. Just as I've said before these vehicles are laptop with wheels and cannot place ICE paradigm onto EVs.

Inside or outside of the vehicle? There was what we used to call the coffin creaking sounds that came from the front of the vehicle. That was the cooling duct intake opening and closing. Have not read anything about interior vent closing being an issue.
