Wife and I just got back from ice climbing in Ouray, CO and skiing Silverton, monarch, and wolf creek. We did some camping at an RV park and quite a bit of winter driving.

Driving:
  • R1T continues to feel fantastic with winter tires. Still haven’t felt nervous on really any road, and we drove through some pretty big storms.
  • Our trip efficiency calculation no longer matches the “distance/total energy” calculation- is that how it always is? Trip efficiency says 1.66, we had skis above the cab and quite a bit of vampire drain overnight since we were away from chargers often and in pretty cold weather
  • We did 90% of our charging on the two RAN chargers in Colorado and they were great. We had no issues, one stop had one non-operational. Locations are better than EA too, both you can walk somewhere better than a sams club.
Camping:
  • A heater in our FSR insulated tent worked really well. Since we were camping we ran it on just the fan overnight and had no condensation issues. We were plugged in so I can’t speak to the power usage.
  • Our plywood tonneau worked great in the snow and ice, no issues
  • We did have some door handles freeze up that we had to chip ice out of. We did not precondition prior to arriving at the vehicle. Also had a gear tunnel door button freeze up, ironically the water looks like it pooled in the button. Still opened fine with the screen button, but annoying. Pic attached.
Skiing and climbing:
  • Great. Ouray had a ton of routes open for this time of year. We lucked out with weather and it was warm. Skiing was a little denser than normal in Colorado but we had great deep snow all over.
A few pics attached. Enjoy winter!

Awesome. What winter tires were you running and what would you say was range hit? Thanks for sharing.

We have the blizzak LT in the stock 20” size. We typically get 2.0mi/kWh on day trips in the 2-3 hour range, Colorado temps. We averaged 2.3 with the pirellis over the summer.

You guys are some hardcore winter campers! Is Ouray where that manmade Ice climbing park is located? That looks like so much fun.

We stayed in a hotel for some of the trip too. But we lucked out with warm weather.

yes Ouray is where they farm the ice, it is a lot of fun.

It has been a great start to the season. That charger was at wolf creek, it is pricy but great that it’s available. One fast charger and 4 L2s.

Thanks. Woah that is pretty good if the typical covers these temps. Awesome to see you using the truck like this and thanks for sharing with the group.

I plan on road tripping to Crested Butte, Steamboat, and a few other locations this summer so thank you again for posting!

Yeah, we are pretty satisfied with the range on the snow tires. It was less on this trip with the skis on the roof, and less around town with frequent cabin/battery conditioning and not much mileage, but when we track our typical drives to the mountains we are almost always around 2.0 mi/kWh.

Awesome - It is great that in Colorado you can get anywhere you need to with an EV these days, you just have to make some small compromises on charging speeds and locations sometimes. (i haven't spent too much time in NW Colorado, but at least to Steamboat isn't an issue)

I've been driving a Tesla M3 for the past 2 years and only driven it in the mountains in the summer - we have an Explorer for winter mountain excursions but I'm looking forward to changing that with the R1T!

I will admit my only charging experiences have been with the Tesla SC Network so I'll need to become more adept at charging routes/options especially along 285 and the I-70 corridor!

Electric heater or propane? Mind sharing the model? I've been meaning to try ski camping with my RTT and want to try a similar setup.
