True, Rivian might need a brand extension first
I think it's a good idea - at least until the battery tech gives us better ranges and faster charging. Clearly an interim solution, but much better than the typical hybrid concepts.. If Rivian would offer it as an option, I would buy it and appreciate it most when towing.

The generator doesn't need to be a big thirsty engine. It can be a simple 1 cylinder motor that runs at a low constant RPM (like any generator, hello?!).

It does if you are towing long distances. IMO the generators need to be sized to 115-130kW minimum to be able to maintain steady state everywhere. Going into limp mode if you hit the mountain range after exhausting the battery is going to be an awful experience.
