Easy to find a stretch of highway in Colorado that's 70 miles between decent fast chargers. Add in 3000+ feet of elevation gain and that can be 30-40% battery in perfect conditions let alone if it's cold and/or you have a roof box.

Of course if it's 70 miles between chargers then you're only 35 miles away at any time, but who really wants to realize they're not going to make it and turn around.

Gas gauges are typically pessimistic and show a reading lower than actual. Even when my Miata hits 0 miles to empty, I still have about 2 gallons in the tank. At 35+ mpg, that's at least another 70 miles. 70 miles in the Rivian would be 20% or so, and 0% is a lot closer to true zero.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
Range anxiety? Not trying to mock, its just we've all grown used to '..eh, there's gas stations everywhere. If I need gas, I'll just pull over and get some'. It's different when you have an EV and you have to think about it.
It’s true. I used to charge up every time the vehicle hit 20%. I commute 1 hour round trip (40+ miles) for work and I have to charge publicly, because I don’t have a garage. Now that I’ve had my EV for 16 months I let it drop into the teens sometimes. It charges much faster when it’s lower too.

It’s just a different mindset that you have to get used to. Percentage is much better than miles though, because BMI can be all over the place. Also make sure to turn off Sentry Mode or Gear Guard when at home and let the vehicle actually sleep.

Ely now has a Tesla SC but where is the station in Wells? Elko, West Wendover, and Twin Falls were the reliable destinations that I have encountered. If there is a new one, I would love to note it.
Wells NV Flying J has a fairly new GM Energy CCS1. Was not open yet when I passed through late last year. Had to stretch Ely to Twin Falls. Plugshare says now open. Listed on Rivian charging map. Vehicle should find it. Supercharger in Wells is not compatible. There is another Shell Energy under construction as they convert a municipal charging station.

Many thanks for the update. I did a reset on Plugshare and it popped up.

The Shell charge station has been "under repair" for years. I don't think they are too serious.
This was from four years ago when it didn't work.

Because it is a lot less. Why does a full battery feel better than a full tank? Because I didn’t have to go to a gas station.

Yin and Yang battery state of charge—love it. (Even 70% battery state of charge feels better than a full tank of gas because I didn’t have to go to a gas station.)

Because a numeric "33%" and especially "50 miles" (when you get that low) are very defined numbers. "A needle pointing somewhere around the one-third mark" on older gas cars just doesn't have the same urgency. It's just a line on a dial.

Because in my nonscientific perspective, the elements and driver(s) use have a higher impact on our “fuel” consumption than an equivalent ice vehicle.

And as some have noted, the reliability of our “fueling” options are lower than those of an ICE vehicle. But, well, we should all set our expectations accordingly.

I have had my R1T for a year and a half and have found that the distance and percentage are more or less accurate within a few miles of the actual mileage driven. But instead of seeing a needle on a gas tank indicator drop into the 3/4 full mark after 80 miles, I see my battery icon drop to around 80%.

The only difference is instead of it running me $4.59 a gallon or around $100 to fill from 1/4 tank, it costs me $0.26kW / $21 (L2 / Home) to fill the battery to capacity from 1/4 "tank". Considerably less, like $0.00 if the sun is shining and I am recharging of my solar panels.

It feels like that to me in winter but not so much in summer.

When on the road trip, I usually drive down to ~10% SOC between charging stops. In our ICE vehicles, I stretch till the tank is around 1/8th remaining.

In town, I usually plug the vehicle in if it was driven that day regardless of the SOC so I never really see anything below 45%. Always fill up the gas tank at around 1/4 tank.

It's an interesting perception difference between an EV and an ICEV. If I think about it, its more likely that I would charge at 33% SOC than fill up the tank with 1/3....
