How Well Does the Rivian R1T Tow?

We pulled 5650 pounds of BMW 328i wagon strapped to a Futura trailer, and everything about it was fabulous—except for the limited range and charging logistics.

Rivian R1T R1S Car and Driver: How Well Does the Rivian R1T Tow 5650 Lbs? - Range Results 2022-rivian-r1t-towing-3-1643735163

"At 75 mph, we found the R1T (unladen, with just a driver) to have a highway range of 220 miles. But with 5650 pounds of BMW E91 328i wagon strapped to a Futura trailer, the real-world range is cut in half at similar speeds. Adding even this moderate trailer turns the one-stop, roughly 4.2-hour trip (including the time to charge) into a four-stop, 6.2-hour affair (according to estimates provided by A Better Route Planner). And that is pulling into Traverse City with just 10 percent charge. Cross your fingers for a tailwind, or only plan to tow on downhill grades.

Fortunately, describing how the Rivian pulls a trailer can be summed up with one word: fabulous. It never feels sluggish off the line or when passing thanks to the four motors and their prodigious torque. When slowing down, the regenerative braking feels natural. Plus, we didn't detect a hint of trailer sway, which is greatly a function of how the trailer is loaded, but we didn't even feel so much as a tug from crosswind."

C&D says "At 75 mph, we found the R1T (unladen, with just a driver) to have a highway range of 220 miles."

That's very different than "In Edmunds' real-world testing, we managed to drive 317 miles of full charge"

So there is a 44% difference in range between the two reviewers? I realize that there are many parameters (weather, tires, elevation, etc), so we need more data to better understand these numbers.

75 mph and near freezing lowered the range vs the Edmunds test of mixed driving in higher temps

Edmunds isn't a highway course.

But it wasn't in cold stark weather either. They operated in more optimal weather, which will and did impact the numbers.

It's already been proven that vehicles have less performance in cold weathers, EVs included. That this got 220 miles in 20" ATs in cold weather isn't bad for a vehicle EPA rated at 314 miles in optimal weather, using 21" tires, in conservative mode. That's roughly a 30% loss (considering the range losses from using 20" tires and weather), which is about average for EVs losses in cold weather. That the R1T pulled this off in ATs while being that heavy, I expected a greater range loss real world numbers.

Towing, I expect this to do about 157 miles. In cold weather, I expect even less range (possible 100 - 120 miles) real world numbers.

Edmunds tested with the 21" wheel/tire package and ran in Conserve mode.

220 on AT Tires - if you want range, get the 21 inch tires. It's simple.
