Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
According to the earnings report and the shareholder letter, it looks like R2’s will start delivering in Q2 of 2026.

“… It’s incredibly exciting to see the early strong reviews of the R2 pre-production builds, and we can’t wait to get them to our customers next quarter.”

https://electrek.co/2026/02/12/rivian-rivn-q4-2025-earnings-report-yoy-growth/

And again in the shareholder letter.

“Progress on the manufacturing launch of R2 remains on track with the first customer deliveries expected in the second quarter of 2026.”

He mentions a few things here like "premium interior" that suggests that there might be more than one interior grade and also that the $45K model will go on sale "Shortly" after the LE. He was being pressured on the $45K price and seems like he didn't want to say when. Also says that LE will have the "Largest" battery pack. He also says that on March 12the the entire portfolio will be unveiled.

Sweet! I mean the earliest Q2 month is April. It could happen. 👀
Employees are getting first dibs again. But I anticipate ramp happening a lot faster with R2.

There are about 15,000 employees. Then the next group are people who already have a Rivian, right? They’ve delivered about 175,000 vehicles since 2021. Of course not everyone will want an R2, but I’ve read there are at least 200,000 reservations as of early 2025 (probably closer to 250,000 now). I wonder how many of those are from already existing Rivian customers?

Makes sense to have Explore and Adventure trims along with potential Ascent for the Tri.
You will have different tics potentially, stereo, seat options etc.

If they only plan to sell 20-25k this year then odd the cheapest RWD model
would be out so soon.

Technically the confirmed pricing and specs, which is likely for the launch edition. Not sure if the configurator will actually happen.

IMO, if there is a configurator I think it's just limited to the LE and it won't have the models that follow in the Fall (Single RWD or Trimotor). So on 3/12 you'll just be able to play dress-up with the LE in terms of exterior & interior color options. Not sure if they will have more than one wheel option. But if they do, you can switch that around too.

I would guess a large % are current Rivian owners and a large % of people really hoping for a $45K variant. Their are very few reasons to eat the high depreciation and downgrade to a R2 if you have an R1S. But there are a large % of people who rent their lifestyle (lease) w/R1, which going down to the R2 will feel like a bargain.

Getting existing customers, anti-tesla people and existing fans of the brand to buy isn't going to be enough. They need to knock it out the park on price or value or both to pull in those looking at Rav4, Subaru, Bronco Sport, Jeep Cherokee , CR-V etc.... crowd, which are all going to be much less expensive.

My Guess, it's priced all-in style, similar to what the LE R1's did. You can pick you color and your tires/wheels (on-road or ATs) and MAYBE your autonomy package (buy or monthly). They might just force you to buy the Autonomy as part of the launch for 2 fold, its easy margin and they need real world driving data to feed the "flywheel"

Very true on all accounts. I hope they don’t price themselves out.

RJ actually said it will be live on 3/12 so they can start planning mixes for production builds.

I still don't know how RJ does it. Man is a saint. If every time someone threw a mic in my face and started with "YOU GUYS LOST BILLIONS OF DOLLARS OMG" I'd walk away. New product launching and that is your starting questions? I get this is partially for investors but yikes.

Love that everything (if not most) will be unveiled on March 12th. Holding off on any crazy purchases until we get more details on what the R2 Tri is all about. Hopefully we can get a Gear Guard badge with it since it would be the performance one. I'm a child inside. That would win me over.

You're not going to find out much if anything about the Tri on 3/12 except an estimate of sometime in 2027 for the release of that model. What they're shipping first is the Launch Edition, not 5 different trim lines with two different batteries and three different motor configurations. Just the Launch Edition. I'm hopeful that they will also announce the Base edition and start taking orders for that, with shipments starting in the fall.

The Tri is really the least important R2 version right now. The expected premium puts it up close to the lower-end R1, and that means volumes are going to be low simply because the market at that price is much smaller. And it doesn't make sense to introduce a halo Tri until the Gen 3 hardware and lidar is ready to ship - the Tri is going to be top-of-the-line everything. That pushes it out to 1Q27 at the earliest.

The big challenge for Rivian at this moment is to capture market share in the average-price car range. The Base model is critical both for the price and for the fact that a lot of the reservations are planning to purchase that model. It's important to meet their (repeatedly affirmed) commitment of a $45k model - if they delay the Base until next year it will be even harder to pull that off. If anything is going to capture the market share it will be the Base not the Tri. And while some of that market share will come from the Model Y and other EVs, those represent only a few percent of the overall market. Focusing only on EV competitors is just trying to be a big fish in a little pond - the R2's biggest opportunity is capturing the other 90+% of the market held by ICE right now. A lot of those people haven't switched to EVs because there are no EVs in that price range that meet their needs/wants. In my case I never ever even considered buying a Model Y because I don't need or want a sedan. And that eliminated pretty much any EV on the market until the R1 came along. I expect the R2 will be similar - it will appeal to a whole new market segment that hasn't bought an EV because they don't want a sedan.
