Watched the video. Honestly seems like legacy auto's first true EV program. Giga-casting, zonal architecture, lfp cells, etc. Primary focus is efficiency and cost.

As said above this sounds very promising.
BMW would like a word - they are not doing many of these things - large castings, LFP etc but they have a serious forward looking EV program - and honestly if they didn't have their weird styling quirks would likley be killing it right now.

(I'm not going to count Volvo, as thats effectively a new company with an old badge)

The Ford video said they are using LFP prismatic cells. Which is currently cheapest and most widely available solution to keep costs down. The goal seems like an EV Maverick that rivals or beats ICE pricing.
Interesting, especially when other companies are moving to cylindrical cells, like Tesla. Are these the LFP cells whose tech Ford licensed from CATL?

Yes, CATL licensed battery tech. To be built in Michigan BlueOval Battery Park.

It all sounds good except for the LFP battery. I would need a lot of evidence that it is ok in a cold climate to purchase a vehicle with LFP. A Lot of Evidence! The Rivian LFP offerings have not inspired confidence in that chemistry.

Seems weird to focus so heavily on efficiency for a pickup truck, but I'd gather this thing won't be rated to tow much, like the Slate (which is only going to be rated to tow 1000 lbs)

It does sound promising. Both Lucid and Ford have focused on efficiency as the best way to drive down costs. This makes sense with the battery being the most expensive part of an EV.

I wonder how unconventional they're going with styling to hit those aero targets. Standard truck bodies are pretty aero inefficient. I wonder if this will be more El Camino than Maverick?

Ford's saying the right things. Hopefully reality matches the hype.

Neither did Tesla's promises on their battery day, TBH. The elephant in the room is battery chemistry. For mass adoption, performance in extreme climates (which will soon be almost everywhere because of climate change) and fast 5~10 min charging... We're not going to get there with today's main forms of battery tech/products.

While this is a big step for Ford, there's nothing in the video that is revolutionary in the EV world. They're just taking the first step in catching up. Reminds me of another OEM and laggard... where everything new to them—but 10-yr old tech—is billed as "first-ever" or "all-new" and everyone must drink the kool-aid or else.

Not to worry about the battery... Donut labs got you covered with their ultra cheap, locally sourced, 100 year usable life, lightweight, molds in to any shape, super energy dense, etc, etc, etc.. super secret SS battery. Remember, it's in mass production right now.. :handsinair:

Zero interest in this company except they didn't need to be bailed out during the 2008 recession, so I do give them props for that. Another competitive EV on the market is a good thing though.
I feel bad for ford as my ford lighting is probably the best all around truck I’ve owned . I’ve owned raptors /c450s/f250-350 ect - It truly is a shame they just didn’t continue to make it better.
Marketing wise not sure why they cancelled it instead of pump up a new generation lighting.
