Rivian R1T R1S A pen in a box? 1000010887

Okay, in the Great Scheme of Things, this is pretty insignificant, but I still need to call Rivian out on this one: I ordered a touchup pen (in lovely Compass Yellow) from the Gear Shop. It arrived yesterday, delivered by the nice man in the big brown truck (the UPS drivers around here are generous with dog biscuits--Ada's tail nearly dislocates when we get deliveries). I knew what was in the box, so I was pretty appalled when I got it. And, sure enough--all it had was a touchup pen, which is already in a box. That box was in a plastic bag, which was surrounded by handfulls of brown paper (not shown) and put into a _MUCH_ bigger box. A company that prides itself on treading lightly needs to do better! A padded mailer sent by USPS would have been fine--with a fraction of the waste and at a fraction of the cost!

Discussed long before. Commercial shippers pay lower shipping rates than retail consumers. Plus, shipping supplies (boxes) cost $, so shippers tend to stock sizes they most commonly use and take advantage of economy of scale (i.e. bulk pricing); larger quantities of fewer sizes, lower per unit cost. Save the moot outrage. It costs them less than you think. It’s also a business expense and tax write-off. Plus, it’s recyclable and [new] cardboard is usually made from low grade tree pulp that would otherwise be discarded. So more of each tree harvested is utilized. And you can save the box, reuse and up cycle.

This reminds me of the time I had a Canon 50 mm prime lens shipped by Amazon in a box that could hold both Rivian crossbars.

Needless to say, the lens was damaged and I had to do a return/exchange.

Yeah I thought to use Amazon as example… they do this all the time. They once shipped me a ceramic dog bowl in an oversized box with no padding. Bowl was smashed into bits.
