Hey all!

So...hopefully we'll get ANOTHER invite to order soon....we got one last week, but the Borealis isn't available yet, so we wait.....Anyway, until then:

If I want to get an adapter for the Rivian plug to work with a CSS supercharger, which one is recommended? I see a few options out there and don't want to order the wrong thing.

We are getting the Emporia Ultimate 48a level 2 installed next week, NACS, hardwired. Just need an adapter for travel.

Thanks!

There's no such thing (outside of Europe) as a CCS supercharger. If you're using that term interchangeablely with DC fast charging, I'd say get the one that Rivian sells (it is free in many states if you add it to your R2 purchase) or buy either the A2Z one or Lectron one.

Not trying to be a dick about the "supercharger" thing up top, but also not sure if you thought Tesla superchargers had CCS handles. I guess, technically, the magic dock ones do but those are few and far between and wouldn't require an adapter for the R2 anyway.

Get the one Rivian offers with its own chargers. That is currently the best out there and the most likely to work fine when there are chargers that can supply up to 650 AMPs, which is the max possible the R2 can pull from DC fast chargers. There aren't any yet.

Just make sure to get the exact same one and not an earlier version. Unfortunately you're not in a state that requires them to give one to you free.

You can get this one from A2Z or you can order these from Rivian when you build the order for your R2. They are others out there but these are solid adapters.

Tesla Superchargers are all NACS plugged. No adapter needed if your car has NACS port.

All other level 3 DC fast charging networks and dispensers that have CCS1 plugs, you need a CCS1 (female) to NACS DC (male) adapter.

What Rivian provides/sells are the ones with Rivian’s approval. Aftermarket adapters have not received such approval. However, A2Zev.com has good quality products and excellent customer support.

The J1772 to NACS AC adapter is for level 2 charging with J1772 plugged charger. Residential. Hotels. Public slow charging.

Yeah, The rivian ones are a lot more, and the Emporia and Grizzl-e are the highest rated....so did the Emporia for it's tie in to the power grid and such.

“Supercharger” is a Tesla name, for their fast charging network. More broadly, all level 3 DC fast charging networks: “DCFC”.

What is the difference between these 2??
Top one is for AC charging, bottom one is for DC charging.

AC is what you'll typically find at a home or hotel. It's slower to charge-several hours until full. DC are the really high speed chargers you typically find along the highway (think Ionna, Electrify America, etc). DC charge the whole battery in roughly an hour (well, not if you are trying to go to 100%)

The $50 one is for level2 charging, like what you will install at your house or some hotels, it is J1772-J3400.

The $200 one is what you would use for DCFC like at Electrify America locations. I have the link there for A2Z CCS1 to NACS as well, less expensive than the Rivian option but still a solid choice.

CCS1 is a combination of J1772 and the 2-pin oblong. NACS is the only format that does AC and DC with one plug/receptacle.

You can pretty much ignore CHAdeMo. Japanese invention and used by older Nissan LEAF. Soon to be phased out in the US.

If you want to get really nit-picky, there are a few Tesla Superchargers that still have the Magic Dock CCS1 adapters on them. Not very many, but they are out there.

Tesla disabled them as they changed their business strategy—from cost of manufacturing and installation new magic dock units—to emulating 1,000+ existing locations to SAE J3400 protocol (and open them to customers of NACS Partner automakers).

Though recently I read somewhere (might be InsideEVs) that they resumed manufacturing Magic Dock to sell to commercial customers who want to operate their own DCFC business (like big box chain retailers).

Tesla still has quite a few Magic Dock stations, some of their V4 stations are Magic Dock as well.

You can look at the Tesla Supercharger map and filter on the 3 types of chargers.

1) Lightening bolt is Tesla only

2) NACS image is open to others with required adapter

3) Lightening bolt inside double parenthesis is Magic Dock locations

Here is a sample of all 3 locations.
