Speaking as a father of four kids, two of which are 20/18 and two that are 12/10....

For the first two years from 16-18 driving I got them a used Fiat 500E. It was 80 miles of range on a good day, <$10k at the time (2019). That way when they whacked things with it inevitably (and did) it wasn't painfully destroyed. In my case she hit a parked car while backing out, and it was handled off insurance as she hit someone we know. cost her about $2000 so hopefully she learned that lesson.

Then when they hit college I replaced the Fiat 500E with a RWD ID.4, so it wasn't crazy fast 0-60 but has a good range (250 miles ish) and plenty of safety features that the insurance premium wasn't as painful.

My son (18) on the other hand he is on the autistic spectrum and so far driving is not something he's good at. He does not judge turning well and my heart can't take driving with him. Because insurance for a male under 21 is 4x the price of the car per half a year we've opted to wait and force his sister to drive him around.

Oh and Uber won't pick up minors solo, they have to have an adult with them.

Very helpful perspective. Thanks!
