I inflated a handfull of pool floaty type things, the vinyl loungers and whatnot. At one point the compressor took a break for a couple minutes. Didn't think much of it, but then when I went to unplug the hose the connector was super hot, too hot to touch. I wasn't using high pressure at all for the floaty things, so I assume the compressor was heating up?

My question are
  1. is there any issue with running the compressor for high volume like that? is the heat an indicator I'm harming it? Or was the break it took an automatic feature to protect it?
  2. Is there a separate compressor for the suspension? Or just one for both? Curious as if I break that and the suspension doesn't work that's a lot worse than just not being able to pump up tires and toys

What you were using was not a compressor, it was an inflator. Yes, they get hot with high volume and heat is problematic for any machine.

The compressor for the air bags is completely separate.

That's normal. I believe Rivian has a temperature sensor to protect from overheating the inflator. I know for certain they have a sensor to protect the suspension compressor from overheating. If you play around to much with the suspension it will shut off.

Inflator/Compressor heating is normal and comes from friction of it operating, friction of air moving through it, and higher heat density due to compressing the air.

When we go tubing I take my electric leaf blower with me because it’s faster than the rinky dink gimmick they’ve got bolted to the car.

thanks. Yeah all makes sense.
it was a random situation that popped up, not a planned outing where I would have taken a high volume pump.
I was mostly worried/wondering if breaking the onboard inflator would affect the suspension but it sounds like those are separate units. Not that I want to break it but setting my level of concern when stuff like this pops up.

It is a high-pressure low volume unit. You were doing high volume low pressure which it is not optimized for at all.
This is it. Should be used sparingly.
