There aren’t any Chinese branded EVs being sold in the US, yet. The tariff is mostly election year politics. China being the boogeyman for both sides, which candidate can look tougher on the issue and be more palatable to a swath of voters. Plus, Biden is choice of unions, including UAW (who has already endorsed him). And GM, which is about to relaunch their Bolt, can relax a bit.
What’s interesting though, is the tariffs include Chinese batteries. So what’s going to happen to all EVs (including Ford) currently or planned to be sold in the US with CATL batteries? What about Polestar? What about Volvo’s sub-40k EX-30, which is a repackage Smart from China? Will they get a special pass? This tariff might be just theater.
