I guess what I am struggling with is what is so different now with the R1S. I've driven the Lexus 570's for the last 12 years with one set of year round tires. I know the R1S is 2000 pounds heavier but is that the only reason I need dedicated snows?Your best option is a second set of tires that you can change out winter and summer. A dedicated snow tire will always give you the best performance in winter snow. If you are heading to the mountains for a day of skiing you are more safe with dedicated snows. I have a set of Doge pickup wheels mounted with almost new WildPeak tires (600 miles). I used the rims with a set of Michelin X-Ice tires for the last 2 winters. I can't recommend the WildPeak tires for winter driving but if hitting dirt roads in the mountains they are perfect. You can try the tires in the snow but I did not like them because I drive in snow most of the winter in Park City and wanted the performance of the X-ice. I have the rims and tires for sale on this forum. As a 65 year old outdoors guy with home in Winter Park and driving Berthoud Pass 25 times per year I still need to learn some things.No. If you have never driven on dedicated snow tires you can't really tell the performance difference between any all wheel drive car and the Rivian. With dedicated snow tires you get a different tread design and more importantly the composition of the tread material is very different. On any vehicle, a dedicated snow tire will not last as long as an all season if you are always driving on dry roads but the performance is very noticeable. The tread is made of much softer material. Your breaking ability and cornering capability is almost as good as street tires on a dry road. If you are a cautious snow driver you can get away with a good all season tire until some idiot pulls into your lane or pulls out in front of you and you need to maneuver or brake rapidly. The dedicated snow will perform far greater then the all season. Plus when the All season gets worn the tread is still fine for dry road use but can be dangerous for snow driving. If you live in snow country I would drive on snow tires. If you only drive several days in the snow you can get away with newer all season tires.
Curious. Are you in a heavy Rivian?I drive in all kinds of snow in the Sierras and I have never felt the need for dedicated snow tires. I find ATs with the 3-peak certification to be all I need. I keep them on year around and also use in desert and on trails in the warmer seasons. YMMV.
I've had my R1T for a little over 2 years now and haven't bothered with dedicated snow tires (I'm on 21's). Lived in Colorado my whole life and I've never had snow tires. We ski winter park and steamboat regularly and I haven't had any issues with the stock Pirelli's at all. Just switched to the Michelin Defender LTX MS2's at about 25k miles and they seem to be better in the snow. I have yet to be convinced that I need snow tires.Just picked up R1S dual max. My wheels are 22’s with Pirelli Scorpions. Does anyone know of a great real all season so I don’t have to change out tires summer and winter? I am in Colorado and drive lots of summer and winter miles in the mountains.
