Every other "legacy" maker has long since had this figured out. I do not need my truck to read my mind, touching the handle with my key in my pocket is plenty good. This is a solution in need of a problem that just made more problems instead.

Agree. Passive unlock is turned off at home because of proximity problems, and so the entire experience becomes annoying. The fob is designed terribly; one must fumble with it in order to find the very poorly marked unlock button.

Even when passive unlock is in use, half the time it doesn’t work with my brand new iPhone.
I got this to protect the rather expensive fob...it also addresses the button visibility issue:

I use the fob for the most part. My wife wears the wristband and uses that.

She has an iPhone 14. Is there a setting in the iPhone somewhere to make it more responsive?
Make sure you have “always on” in the location settings for the Rivian app and not “just while using app”.
Also, it can be even more laggy if you turn on iPhone “battery saver mode.”

Its gotten extremely bad for me after the last update. It just flat out doesnt work and I have to open the app 9/10 times to manually unlock the car. Which is a ton of fun when I'm holding my toddler or groceries, or both.

add me to the chorus... I use the fob mostly and depending on which direction I approach the R1T it takes some time for the car to be aware of me. I've complained and I have it as an issue for my upcoming SC appointment (Friday!) - maybe I have a bad receiver? but in general, what a pain - I mean the frunk and tailgate double click are useless. PaaK was also pretty useless, however opening the truck with the app almost always works quickly.

add me to the apple watch complication concept because maybe that will be the best of all worlds.

Sometimes my iphone unlocks R1T perfectly when I'm walking up to the car, but most of the time it's sluggish and annoying. I've also had the issues where I have to hold the keycard up ot the door once inside the vehicle. The entire experience could be MUCH better. I'd use the FOB but too bulky, and the buttons have terrible ergonomics.

Have you tried rebooting the UI or the vehicle? Over the years with my Tesla I have found more often than not that will resolve any behavior quirks that pop up.

4 days in and I could not be more pleased with PaaK. It's flawless with my Pixel Pro 7. For insurance, I keep a card key in my phone wallet.

I haven’t tried that that’s a good idea

We just use the Fob because we walk by the car constantly (we walk places more than drive) all day with phones in our pockets. We just hang the Fob on a hook in the mudroom and share it, hasn’t been a problem.

We took delivery on Saturday and I must say the locking / unlocking is even more annoying than I anticipated. Why couldn't they just have installed a touch sensor on the door so you could lock / unlock by touching it? My 2015 Porsche has this feature and it works great and reliably, 8 years later!

1. There is only one fob, so my wife and I each can't have a fob. Therefore, we must use phones or the cards.
2. We have turned off passive lock / unlock at home because I go in and out of the garage a lot and I am always carrying my phone. Having to pull out my phone and open an app every time I want to unlock my vehicle is absolutely absurd for an $80k vehicle in 2023.
3. Phone proximity unlock isn't working for my wife at all
4. Sometimes we park in the driveway and not the security of our garage. Since we have passive locking turned off at home, there is no way to lock the vehicle without stopping to take out my phone or fob. Again totally ridiculous.

I needed to vent. I am wondering if anyone else is as frustrated as I am.
No. Almost 100% satisfied.

I have to say, my lock/unlock experience has been much better than I had anticipated. Mostly, I‘m using the Fob, but sometimes have my phone with me. When away from home, it always seem to lock as I walk away and unlock by the time I reach the door on my return. Still wish I could us my Apple Watch as a key, however. Then, I wouldn’t even need the fob. I will be lost if my fob fails/breaks.

Legitimately, I have to wait at my R1T 3 out of 10 times with Phone as a key (min.) for the doors to unlock, sometimes, requiring a phone reboot. The same is true for our new R1S, but the 2023 Model Y has never failed to be ready to open or drive. The Tesla experience is infinitely better and I'm a dual Rivian owner, and if you factor in Supercharging, you can't even compare the experience.

Too bad all you get with a Tesla is ...well.....a Tesla.....bland, boring, people movers....

I pretty much think it sucks. It was bad in May 2022 when my truck was delivered and really hasn't improved at all since.

It can pickup my phone THROUGH THE FLOOR one level below and wake it self to unlock, but half the time it can't be bothered to unlock itself when I'm staring right at it.

Irritated with it? - Yes.
Dissatisfied with it? - Yeah, I'd say so.
Totally dissatisfied? - Not really. It eventually works 100% of the time which stops me from going here.
