When you buy a car out-of-state you generally pay the dealer the sales tax and the dealer sends the revenue to your home state, but there are exceptions. Check out this article

Update 3/25/19:

@krcossin has posted the "something special" that Rivian had mentioned preorderers would be receiving - it's a signed letter by RJ Scaringe and a design sketch print.

Rivian previously said that all preorders would be receiving a special package in the new year. Has anyone received anything yet? I keep checking my mail.

Any guesses what the gift could be?

Yes you pay either sales or use tax.

But if its "kept out of state" for a defined period of time, you wouldn't have to pay the tax.

My parents took out of state delivery of their 38' Ailpine motor coach in 2000. Kept it in Reno for a few months then went on a 10mo road trip. Never paid sales or use tax on it.

Congrats on your R1T. Just to relieve any possible confusion, you only ordered the truck. The battery is what you’d like to order given the opportunity when the configurator goes live.

Give it another month or two
