Can you press and hold the liftgate button to set the power open height?

Not right now. At least not that I've seen documented or been able to get to work like I've done in other cars.

Yes to both. You get a notice on the driver display but the vehicle doesn't stop you and so far as I tested doesn't speed limit you ( I got up to 35mph)

The recall was hugely overblown by the media and, in particular, the financial analysts. That doesn't concern me at all. Towing costs aren't out of line with other manufacturers and don't concern me either. What this has highlighted for some, especially those not living near one of the existing service centers, is that Rivian really is a startup and the service network is still early days. That should improve over time as more service centers open, as the mobile service fleet expands, and as quality control from the factory improves (SCs currently seem to be overloaded with deliveries and fixing the early defects).

Yes, it stayed out. It was completely open so if you are asking if it flopped around, not it didn't.

Oh, I think the original posters were asking if you could lower the liftgate into its closed position while the tailgate was down and have it stay shut. Without the latch it wouldn't be fully-secured, but since the lift mechanism is motorized I thought there might be a chance it could pull the liftgate shut without the latch.

Sorry, I think there's two questions getting conflated here.

The first one I asked was about setting the max height for opening the liftgate. You did answer that -- it's not supported yet.

The second question asked by others was can you drive with the tailgate down but the liftgate closed. Your first reply said yes, at least up to 35 mph with a warning on-screen. I asked the follow-up of how does the liftgate stay closed since the latching mechanism is inside the top of the tailgate. I speculated that maybe the motors which typically lift and hold the liftgate open may also be able to close and hold the liftgate closed (since the tailgate latch would be unusable in this scenario). Your response seemed to imply you drove with the liftgate fully opened, not closed.

@astonius - ok, now I am clear. My test was with the liftgate fully open like I was hauling a couch or something. While it would be possible to override the liftgate position as I described and lower to just where it touches the tailgate but doesn't lock into place, this is not something I have checked on.

When you have a minute could you measure the overall length of the R1S with the lift gate open? My garage isn’t very deep and I’m worried I won’t be able to open the lift gate with the garage door closed. Thanks

@svet-am and other current R1S owners-

Is it possible to get a close picture of the lift gate (upper) latch point? On our Land Rover, the lift gate latch is effectively a loop with no moving parts and the tailgate contains the movable latch. When we want to drive with the tailgate down and lift gate closed, we can use a bungee (or 2) to keep the lift gate closed, as if it is latched onto the tailgate.

If the R1S is the same then the only issue should be figuring out how to lower the lift gate (power or manually) while the tailgate is down and I think this will satisfy a lot of folks.
