The distance is not the same according to the computer it was exactly 3% more distance travelled which makes the computer think it got 3% better efficiency than it did.

Another consideration is the rolling resistance of the tires involved. I have experience with the Michelin Defenders on an ICE 4runner and they get significantly better efficiency due to lower rolling resistance.

Are we closer to determining the most efficient A/S tire on 20's yet? Possibly in combination with a lighter rim as is tested here? Looks like weight is a pretty big contributor, along with width and rolling resistance.

Seems like those Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 with [AW01] may give pretty interesting results :)

Hello all,

We conducted another test recently. This time we compared OEM 21" on Pirelli Scorpion Verde 275/55/21 vs our client’s AW10 22" with Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 275/50/22. It's worth mentioning that the Pirelli had a mileage of around 11,000 miles.

We used Racebox to adjust and calculate real efficiency for every set to make it as precise as
possible.

It helped us to see that the speed with AW10 22” on Michelin is 1.166% more than OEM 21” with Pirelli.

  • Vehicle: Rivian R1T 2023 Adventure
  • Distance: Each run was a consistent 10.5 miles at the same spot and direction.
  • Autopilot: Set and steady at 70 mph, hands-free all the way
  • Traffic and Control: No interference, didn’t touch the gas or brakes.
  • Cabin Temperature: Held a comfy 73°F throughout.
  • Tire Pressure: A steady 49-50 psi for both sets of tires.
  • Passengers: Two in the vehicle for each spin.

Even the outside temperature was 6° different , we believe it didn’t affect the result noticeably. It’s good to know, that it’s possible to switch to a bigger rims and still don’t lose any range.

It would be interesting to compare wheels using the same tires, to calculate the impact of the weight only. More test will be coming in the future.

We personally love the way titan AW10 22” looks at Rivian.

That’s great data, thank you for sharing!

From what I can gather, the MS2 in 22” spec is an E-rated tire, and according to Tiresize.com, is pretty porky (52lbs). Your wheels look great and are very light, so that helps compensate for the extra tire weight if it’s the same spec.

So now I’m looking at your 20” wheels with the MS2 in in 275/60 (which is 14lbs lighter than the 275/50/22) ... these are not ideas I need in my head right now. :)

Surprisingly, both the MS2 20" and 22" tires weigh almost the same.

But even [AW10] 20x9 inch rims and [AW10] 22x8.5 inch rims weigh roughly the same, and the tire weights for both are almost identical, choosing 20" wheels will save more energy. This is because having the weight closer to the wheel's center makes it easier for a vehicle to accelerate and decelerate the wheels. With 22" wheels, the larger tires distribute more weight further from the center, increasing the moment of inertia. This means a vehicle has to exert more effort to speed up and slow down those wheels, which can negatively impact the range. Therefore, despite the similar weights, 20-inch wheels are more battery-efficient due to how the weight is distributed.

Thanks! There appears to be an error on tiresize.com as they state the 22” tire is an LT and weighs way, way more. This makes a lot more sense.
